49ers players say they didn't know Super Bowl overtime rules

Niners players: We didn't know overtime rules
Multiple 49ers players said they were not aware of the NFL's postseason overtime rules.
you had two weeks to prepare, tho.
Makes sense. If they had know the rules they wouldn't have been stopped by the Chief's D and they would have stopped the Chiefs from scoring the game winning TD.49ers players say they didn't know Super Bowl overtime rules

They explain the rules at the coin toss!
Or go for the two point conversion for the winIt didn't matter because even under the regular season overtime rules, the other team gets the ball if you only kick a field goal. The only way it is different is that even if you score a TD on the first possession, the other team still gets a chance to tie.
You’d think a coach who has been to a superbowl might prepare his team for these scenarios.49ers players say they didn't know Super Bowl overtime rules

Exactly. They explain the rules at the coin toss!

you would still go first knowing that if you're at 3rd and long in your own territory you'd have to punt if you don't convert (unless you get a defensive holding call....)? but if you defer, at 3rd and long, (edit to clean it up a bit: assuming you have to go for it on 4th since the other team scored), and you can play call knowing you don't have to pick that first down on a chunk play on 3rd? i think it limits your options a bit if you go firstIf you don’t read the article the headline makes it seem they didn’t know the new rules period. The truth is they didn’t know until the end of regulation. They said they were posted on a screen in the stadium.
The real difference here is KC players say they prepared for this every game of the playoffs. They were prepared with a plan for every scenario.
I agree with the decision to go first but like others said you have to treat it like. TD or nothing situation.

But of all the possible outcomes for receiving the ball first….safety, pick, punt, fg, td, the only relevant one where you would have a 3rd possession is if you kick a fg and they come back with a fg. Yea if you kick and fg and stop them on 4th, you win. If they are into analytics I would think that is a coin flip strategy problem. The writers of that article seemed to think that the Digits going first gave the Chiefs all the advantages. That's just stupid. If the Digits had held the Chiefs to a FG, they would have gotten the ball back, and at that point it's sudden death for real. They obviously failed to hold the Chiefs to a FG, but that's an on-the-field problem, not a coin-flip-strategy problem.
And one of them understood .Exactly.
