DT- Earl Mitchell to visit on Wednesday

I know this player was a 3rd rd. pick and has played in the league now since 2010, but he was poorly ranked as a run stopper last season so I really am uncertain as to what he still has left or what kind of player the team will get.

Am actually preferring Caraun Reed over Mitchell but wonder what others know about Mitchell.

He's a decent enough vet at a low-value position who ended up getting overpaid because the 49ers needed an infusion of players who fit their new defensive scheme despite the entire team being a hopeless dumpster fire that offered no short-term hopes of winning.

At this point I think he's perfectly fine as a one-year stop gap that would allow the Seahawks to allocate draft resources to other needs.

He got benched at the end of last year not because he can't play, but because the 49ers weren't playing for anything, they weren't set on keeping him, and they had younger and cheaper talent who were already doing doing what he was doing limited roles (with nothing to play for, why not see if that translates to more snaps).

If the Hawks sign him and plug him in that doesn't AT ALL mean that they can forget about the position, but it does mean they can drop it lower on the list of positions they need to be concerned about for a year.

They already had picked up Jamie meder from Cleveland.

Have to have guys here to mentor and be in a rotation for camp with a chance to make the team, as we saw last year just because we sign them does not mean we keep them.

Yes, I suspect you are right.

They will comb through the available FAs until they find a few acceptable guys @ DT willing to play for what they offer. The right guys will get more and they can be expected to chop and change as they see opportunities. I do suspect they'd like to sign Nick Perry and Jordy Nelson there time will tell.

To me, I don't know much about Mitchell as he played mostly for Houston but was somewhat invisible in SF. Noticed Reed when the team played against Dallas and then noticed his pre-draft combine numbers which indicate good explosiveness. Neither have had very exceptional positional results but Reed is younger and apparentlypotentially more athletic.

Those two are included on the list because they signed big contracts here as free agents after their initial rookie deals expired; Mebane for $25 mil in 2011 and Bryant for $35 mil the following year.

Pete puts a premium on experienced DL depth and is constantly adding more. Since this thread we've added another two in Marsh and Orchard and my money is on at least one more veteran DT being added in late May.
