At what point does a player become worthy of an extension?

I think you are confused……Seahawks paid

Wilson
Wags
Carson
Brown
Diggs
Lockett
sherman
thomas
Wright
plus many others.

The question is, when is it smart to pay a player and when it is not smart.
So when is it smart?

Certainly not when a QB with major limitations will want to be the highest paid QB in the league to the tune of $51M/year (if not more).
just seems like were turning into the browns of the past and the lions and all these basement dwellers that dont pay anyone and just ship off players before their next contract. ship out dk, we may as well ship out anyone before they can hit a second contract.

Third contracts to a player have tended to be bad for the team. Although I’d say the first couple years of BWags third deal was worth it, but the last two made sense to renegotiate or move on from.

I think second contracts the team has given out to its core players have worked pretty well.

free agent deals, are probably a hit and miss, Amy e 50/50 case.

I believe I just listed a bunch of core Seahawks who received second contracts.

Russell’s case, we would have been looking to give him a third contract, later in his career at record market levels. Those are the type of deals that have blown up on the Hawks.

I think the Hawks were ready to pay DK…..the receiver salary market went berserker along with the QB market this winter. When markets go crazy it is not very often a good strategy to buy at the top of the market. Sometimes tweaking or changing strategy is necessary to find value where others are not currently focused or to take advantage of an inflated market.

I agree with this. second contracts to good/great players are almost always worth it. shows the rest of the team it is worth it to come in and play hard. I think trading DK sends a bad message IMO.

I couldn't agree more. I think it will send a bad message and be a bit of a morale killer for the team.

I think it’s fair to question if a player has dropped off his commitment and level of play relative to he contract. At the end of the day, it’s still a business. Too heavy ($$$) on a player that may no longer fit is dangerous long term.

Fact is you can't pay everyone but you can't just let everyone go either. Not paying a ego maniac qb on the decline 50 mill a year and trading him for a good return makes sense. I can't see them letting Dk walk after his rookie deal. I guess if they could get multiple firsts for him consider it but eventually you gotta pay some stars.

How can they trade DK?

Who would be their star?

Who do you put on the ticket graphic? Diggs? Carson?

Nobody cares about our QB, you are not selling tickets with Drew Locke or David or whateverhisnameis?

It is an odd thing to jump so deep into the sky is falling. We have only had six losing seasons this century. The Browns and Lions have only had one more season with winning records combined this century. Neither team is run half as well as this team has been.

I get that a lot of people believe that Wilson was the only thing we had going for us, but his style of play was killing drives. It was also what made him put himself above the system. Truth is that our head coach has gotten a lot of flack from people who were in the building for coddling Wilson and looking the other way when one if his tennets has been "All in" which Wilson has not been. We are in for mediocre QB play this season which has a lot of people nervous, but mediocre QB can be worked around. Trying to work around a QB that wants to run his system that failed the previous season was not going to get us to the Super Bowl this season.

Wasn't this the Patriot Way?

At what point does a player become worthy of an extension?

When their current play, health and future potential is still ascending.

When their current play, health and future potential is beginning to decline? No extension.

If you want to be a perennial winner, you can't fall in love with guys. Seattle bought LOW on Wilson, and sold HIGH. He's a good QB, but not worth his own current value. It was the opposite of how Shaun Alexander was handled by Holmgren. Shaun earned the deal by being a complete stud, but you knew he wasn't going to play up to the new deal at 30. It's a fine line, but you just can't reward them for the past. You pay only what you think they'll be worth moving forward. DK would get a huge new deal, as you'd think he's going to continue to get better. Wilson, not so much. Those magician plays and running threats are gone. He's now grown into a different passer. One that's not worth an Aaron Rodgers deal. Selling was a great move. Wagner was tough, as like Alexander He's a HOF type guy. So you kind of want to pay him, but cutting him was the wise move.

To answer the OP, don't pay Penny.
I'm glad they gave him a 1 year deal, essentially picking up his 5th year option they previously declined.
But I don't want to see this team give Penny a $10+ million deal if he balls out this year. Let him walk, he's proven for his first 3 1/2 years he can't be relied on.

Another player coming up as well would be Cody Barton. Now that he's going to be playing MLB with Brooks, he has big shoes to fill. But I haven't been impressed with him either. It wouldn't surprise me if he finished the season with 100 tackles, but they can get that production from Brooks and another linebacker.
