The same could be achieved by benching or demotion to practice squad.
Fair enough. I'm not in that locker room or that office to know why they did what they did. I'm just saying I like that he's more than willing to move on from guys that are not cutting it. Work in progress, even if it's maddening sometimes ☮️✌️

As the weeks go by, it's starting to get painfully obvious this absolutely was a 17 week preseason/rebuild. Roster evaluation, coach evaluation, eating old contracts to reset the cap, etc.

I'm just a little upset I got caught up in the hype and believed we were a playoff team so early.

With ya on the moving on from guys part, just not sure about releasing instead of bench. But, like you said, we ain't in that locker, we don't know what we don't know 😂

Happy to see MM has a very short leash for guys not doing their job. LB is a critical position in this defensive scheme and you need guys who can diagnose and shed blocks all 3 downs. Dodson was constantly out of position and washed away in the run game, even if his tackle numbers were ok.

That said, JS absolutely bungled the FA LB signings and everyone outside of the building was already questioning their plans in training camp.
However, John seems to be a team player thus far, franchise over ego, and impressive. MM and John will either begin to draw very close now perhaps over this and become a unit similar to PC, or this is the visible turning point..

Released instead of traded or benched., releasing means we will still be paying him, right? Ummm, could it be that:

He wasn't coachable? Or, no teams wanted to trade for him? And/or he asked to be released upon im ring benched?

Otherwise why not bench him as a backup.

Not coachable or not on-board with the program.... which could be a good thing -

see PC when he first got to town, knew exactly ehat he wanted, and refused to play guys like Lendale White if they had the wrong attitude.

Or it could be a bad thing... a sign that the coach is preaching something some players are calling BS on and he needs to get any voices of dissent out of town.

See PC in 2015 when he started to clean house of all the LOB ... voices that he tbought would challenge his chosen way of doing things.

In 2010, it was the right thing.

In 2015, it was the wrong thing.

Which is it with Mac? Dont know. But there's certainly a few things amiss, and it's not just at the player level.

Pulling for Mac though, because if it's the coaching thats not working, it's a true rebuild we are looking at, and not a short one.

Without any insider knowledge, I suspect that Dodson was Bill's Ryan Neal, i.e., an average to below-average player who had one season in which PFF ranked him as elite. Under Macdonald, he might not be the most coachable either in terms of attitude or inability to adjust. I am basing my speculation on what Leonard said about his teammates.

As a below-average player with learning issues, Macdonald used him to set an example.

At this point, it may be ok to speculate that not everyone in the locker room bought into what Macdonald and his coaches were preaching, releasing Dodson is more of a message. For toffee, I would be real intrigued to know the signing of Dodson and Baker was a Schneider thing or they were picked by Macdonald. I suspect those two were spoon fed down Macdonald by Schneider.

I assumed that Leslie Frazier had the inside scoop on Dodson...so it would surprise me if he was not bought in, but WTF do I know. I assume MM will address it at some point, but maybe still light on details. The thing I still don't understand is he doesn't show as below avg on screen or in stats. 2nd in tackles behind to Love. Maybe the scheme was too complicated...just dunno.

The reality of releasing Dodson and trading away Baker is important, as the play of our ILBs was really suspect and neither were playing well positionally so the team was constantly being gouged with longer runs.

For me I never really thought Dodson was playing that well and in fact was being targeted as weak spot in the D.

I am hopeful I don't need to say next Sunday "where the #%# are the LBs?" as I have said again and again all season though happy less after Jones arrived.

Very interesting a few of the players they just acquired are released/traded away in the same season.

This has got to make JS question his own decisions and his ability to scout.

Okay, so, yeah, pieces might not fit and players don’t work out, but what made them consider that they would in the beginning and did the coach have any say on the moves to get the players before?

This seems like perhaps not.

I get players don’t work out, but, it’s really telling if they are cutting their losses quickly and trying to move on.

Still makes me wonder, what exactly is Schneider’s plan this season. Or if the guy even has any direction at all.

PFF has Dodson as a top-10 coverage linebacker.

Film guys win again. Seattle Overload dudes Matty and Griff knew he was struggling and knew PFF was wrong. This is a resounding confirmation of who is more in tune with what MM is actually looking to do on defense.

We're so stacked at LB, I saw this coming from a mile away. 😉 Maybe Mac could adapt just a smidge and maximize what we do have? Just a thought.

12s pray that Schneider and Macdonald are working as a team, on the same page, and all of that.

Could be because Joe can't be called up again so they could still resign him to the practice squad when an activate him
