Forget for a moment it was one of the most bone-headed football plays I've ever seen...
Was it really a fumble? Should the ruling have been overturned?

I was watching the game on a non-HD TV at the gym, without audio... so I didn't have a really clear visual and couldn't hear the discussion. From what I could see, it looked like the ball came loose at the exact moment when his forearm struck the ground.

As I understand it, any part of the arm above the hand contacting the ground is "down", just like any part of the lower leg calf touching the ground is "down", even if the knee isn't touching. So if the fleshy part of the forearm hitting the ground caused the fumble, shouldn't it have been ruled down, and remained Washington's ball?

What was the rationale behind the ruling, and do people agree/disagree?

I thought he was down until I was told that the wrist doesnt count as part of the arm and thus doesnt count as being down if it hits the ground. I can see why the fumble was the result of the review.

That said how does this apply with the "ground cant cause the fumble" rule. The fumble was caused imho by the wrist striking the ground.

The rationale was probably that Mexico's Team was playing in the game, but at that point I was just rooting against Jackson for daring to be such a moron...

The ground can cause a fumble, unless a player is already down by contact anything can cause a fumble.
