Bit late on the uptake.

One think I don't like is Mebane's attitude. He's being an ass.

I agree on Mebane to a point because he didn’t need to say it that way, could have been a bit more subtle.
Having said that he’s Technically not wrong.
I just don’t think Zabels level of comp is going to be any more of an issue that any other rookie stepping up to the NFL level of play.

this is an opportunity to discuss the Hutch connection and Mebane’s comments specifically.

Brandon must have missed the senior bowl. We all know GZ just killed it against the best. AT MULTIPLE POSITIONS.

It might be a valid question if the reason Zabel played there was because that conference was his only option. But he turned down NIL offers to stay so he could have gone to a higher profile school if he wanted. Also this would be more of a concern if he wasn't holding his own or better vs guys from other conferences at the Senior Bowl.
Clearly Mebane hasn't done as much research on Zabel as us fans have :)

I like it.

Thoughts?

What you think about Mebane’s comments?
I agree on many counts in Mebane's thoughts. But I would counter with the fact that Zabel faced best of the best at pre draft and was a consensus victor every time he faced one of them. One after another they lined up hoping to be the guy to get the best of him. But what they got was the best FROM him, not of him. That's good enough for me.

Mebane isn't wrong that the level of competition isn't nothing, there's an inherent risk in it, and even the Senior Bowl you're not facing the best of the best, but he could have expressed his thoughts in a way that makes him sound less antagonistic.

I believe he's in the podcast business now, so maybe he's kinda of getting used to being more inflammatory. He should be careful though. Like, does anyone have a negative opinion about Mebane from his time here? I recall him being nearly universally liked by the fan base. I'm sure he doesn't want to tarnish that now.

I respect a former player's position when a) he's talking about the position that he played, b) is employed by the team in a scouting capacity for that position, c) he has scouted that specific player. Mebane is making a general statement about level of competition and applying it to a specific player, but he didn't scout the player.

Mebane is somewhat right - if you randomly grab a player from a smaller school he is probably less talented and less ready for the NFL. But that's not what the Seahawks did; they scouted and evaluated one specific player and decided he was worth a first round pick.

Zabel could've gone to a different school but the main reason he stayed even though he had opportunities to leave was so he could play alongside his younger brother. Jeff Zabel is the TE for NDSU. He killed it at the senior bowl against better competition. There may be growing pains but you can say that about any rookie. I like Mebane but he needs to stay in his lane.

Meh, honestly don't care what Mebane has to say about Zabel. Always liked him, but meh. I care about how Zabel plays on the field.
He's going to be a beast.
Sadly, if he's not 1st team All-Pro after his first season, plenty will start the "bust" talk.

Couple of comments.

Yeah, I trust Hutch on this one far more than Mebane. Great D-lineman for us, but he's off base with this one IMO.

Doesn't NDSU have a bit of a reputation for turning out good O-lineman? I thought I read somewhere that they were like one of the best of the lower tiered colleges at producing them.

IMO, Zabel is taking a bit of a risk by wearing Hutch's number. Thems some big shoes to fill. This just solidifies all the comparisons that will be made. Good on him, though, and best of luck.

I might agree with Mebane if there wasn’t a track record of players making it in the NFL from small colleges. NDSU does play at a lower level than many of the bigger schools in college but they have a track record of having players drafted. It’s not like they are Milton College that produced one NFL player and doesn’t even exist anymore.
NDSU has had 13 players drafted into the NFL since 2014. That averages out to more than one a year. I’m too lazy to do the legwork on Pac12, Big10, etc draftees, but I’m fairly certain some of them would be ecstatic with draft numbers like that.

Zabel isn’t even the only Bison on the Seahawks. Center Jalen Sundell was signed as a free agent last year. He has a good chance to one day be a starter or at the very least a nice career as a backup.

Loved Mebane as a player. He can take his draft analysis and go home.

Wow, Mebane said Zabel is from a small school and the level of competition he faced has him not loving the pick. Call the press. Let's boycott the dude, he didn't love the pick.
