This was a better day for fans watching it, but not perfect. The coolest part for us, scrimmages and 2 minute drills etc happened on the opposite side of the field again. TE pass practice, 1 on 1 vs. various safeties was held on the near field as were a few other things and I kept my eyes in my binoculars for most of the session.

Anyway.. here are my thoughts on training camp today:

1) Jimmy Graham was unstoppable in practice 1 vs 1 on safeties. Dion Bailey and DeShawn Shead in particular at times had good coverage on him, but it didnt matter. The ball would come in high, Graham would box out and though theyd reach, hes too big to reach around to know the ball away. I felt bad sometimes. Bailey eventually was reduced to blatant defensive holding the entire route..and it didnt matter.

2) McCoy had a drop but other than that he and Willson both looked good as well. A 3 TE set I think would give the defense fits this coming season, because you could really dominate the run that way but still really threaten both unstoppable intermediate routes and fly routes. Run it back to back no huddle and you KNOW you will get a severe mismatch on at least one depending on the package the defense puts out to counter it.

3) Safety is our weakest area of depth. ET comes back tomorrow, but no one is rising, so far, to the opportunity Kams absence is providing. I was hoping his half brother would, despite being quite a bit shorter, because I thought it would be poetic..but neither he, nor Shead nor Ronald Martin have made any plays from the SS. Steven Terrell has been filling in at FS and been incredibly average there as well. Triston Wade hopefully will develop quickly.

4) After shining in earlier practices Kevin Smith did not practice today (WR, #17). Dont know why. Bruce Irvin also did not practice but was in uniform and on the field, sans helmet.

5) Theres an outside shot that that Cary Williams is this years Antoine Winfield. At the very least, use pencil when you write him in as the starting RCB. Seisay from Detroit looks the part and plays the part. Tye Smith also has looked good but on the left side so far.

6) Christine Michael today I think was trying to show effort by taking every carry to the house since theres no tackling, but it just looked silly and wasted time somes. There were plays that it was obvious he would have been stopped for 4 yards where he just ran the remaining 35 anyway. Im most likely projecting but I think he is feeling the pressure to perform.

7) Rawls got little work today, Turbin and Michael got most and Rod Smith got most of the rest.

8) Ricardo Lockette had the best catch of the day, judged by the amount of "ooohs" from us spectator in a nice deep route. Graham had a few "oooh...aaaaah!" inducers as well.

9) Kevin Norwood got a lot of looks today. There is significane to that, and to other heavy rotations of certain guys but without being in coaches meetings its hard to know what. Norwood got time at X and Y spots as well as the slot.

Today was my last practice... never got to see the type of drills that make judging line and linebacker play a little feasible..

Hope these were at least a bit of use to those who dont get to attend.

Don't understand the Cary Williams, Antoine Winfield reference.

Williams is 30.
Winfield was 36.

Williams has a 7m dead cap number if cut.
Winfield's was only 1m, IIRC.

Williams is competing at RCB.
Winfield was a NCB.

With Sherman a lock... Williams competition right now is Seisay, Smith, Blackmon, and Burley. Simon and Lane are shelved and I havent seen a time table on either one. 3 of the 4 have hardly any tangible experience in that group and the two B-Bros are likely to be exclusively NCBs.

With Sherman and Browner locks... Winfields competition was Thurmond, Maxwell, Lane, and Blackmon. And as we found out might have been the most elite depth of CBs ever assembled in a season. And Winfield and Blackmon were cut. Simon, the rookie, more or less was stashed on IR as a medical red-shirt.

I dont know if youre suggesting Williams will be cut, per se, or he'll be out competed to a back up role but I highly doubt either will happen.

1. Seahawks arent going to throw away $7m especially thier most experienced CBs.

2. The Seahawks signed Cary Williams probably because his play resembles Maxwell's in style. Niether are shutdown but both at times have a knack for being physical play-makers.

In fact, PFF pretty much graded Maxwell and Williams the same for 2014, with Williams actually having the slighest edge.

For Williams that grading came at:

>>> 400+ more snaps,

>>> being the #1 corner moving to both sides,

>>> an average at best supporting defense that was hardly intimidating nor had the skill of 3 All-Pro DBs anchoring the secondary

>>> A fast-paced offense that wasnt about establishing ball-control as it was trying to score as in little time as possible, a recipe of disaster that has more or less been the achilles heel of the Seahawks defense. A quickly stalling or quickly scoring offense paired with a defense that cant catch the right breaks at times to get itself off the field has led to some losses. For the Seahawks, the circumstances are few and against the ball-conrol philosphy. For the Eagles, it is thier philosophy or lack there of which is why theyre in the midst of a defensive make over.

>>> 2014 NFC East WRs > 2015 NFC West WRs. West and East were matched up last year, so they played a lot of the same teams and players overall.

Overall, I just think its unfair in general that a majority of fans has enshrined Maxwell as an elite corner mostly based on 5 games back in 2013. Yet, there is constant trashing on Williams without him ever showing what he can do with elite coaching at his position and an elite defense getting his back.

We'll see though. Personally, I believe Williams will surprise a lot of doubters and possibly play his way to a 2nd year with the team.

Williams could most definitely be a cut.

Dead money aside, the decision if we look at the dollars will be taking a 7m hit, but replacing that with a cheap rookie salary. That money is already 'spent'. Where it would be prohibitive is if we needed to replace Williams with a veteran stopgap journeyman for a couple million on top of that.

So it'll come down entirely to ability and club control. Obviously for the other guys, the club control/future cap implications is better for the team. If their ability is deemed close enough of an approximation -- then the decision will be an easy one to assume the dead money hit.

It will be admittedly difficult for Seattle to stash DB talent. Teams around the league know they can get talent from our castoffs in this regard. Doesn't mean it's impossible. But the risk is very high, that if we do cut a guy to try to sign to the PS, we should expect him to get signed elsewhere.

Williams always seemed to me to be a quality hedge bet in case our youth isn't ready for prime time. Knowing early on that Simon and Lane were possible and likely to not be ready week 1. Early returns seems to be that the rooks look promising, but aren't just emerging as obviously ready. That can change very quickly in the next couple weeks. I still expect us to keep Williams, but I can easily see the potential for one of the rooks to emerge and make Williams expendable.

The cap hit shouldn't matter. Since the replacement value would be incredibly minimal.

Not sure about that. Remember the money gets them there, but they have to earn the position.

I seem to remember a certain WR that has dead cap space of $7 mil to us this season that is no longer with us and we're all happier for it

Heck, I remember a certain QB that I believe earned $8 mil that was signed as a starter but ended up as a second stringer to a rookie (a rookie who two weeks ago had earned a total of what, $2.2 mil for three seasons? and led us to 2.5 SBs? Yes that's right, 2.5 .... )

If a rookie, heck if some minimum contract player is showing more promise to help us get the W than the higher paid guy, why wouldn't we put the guy in there who will give us better chances at getting the win?

I've been critical of Michael, the running every ball to the end zone isn't a new thing.

I read about this with Jerry Rice. Montana and Young both said every pass Rice caught in practice, he took to the end zone. He visualized always getting to the end zone, and practiced it the same way.

Plus it up's their conditioning, but this is one time I won't criticize a player for that

Ok..obviously need to clairfy. I dont think Cary Wiliams is going to be cut or anything...but I think its possible he doesnt start, certainly not the whole season. I would go so far as to say I would wager the front office HOPES he doesnt start by mid season. Hes an insurance policy and a stop gap. His salary wont figure into what they do, this team doesnt operate like that. Heck, they paid TJ H_______ 7 or 8 million to play somewhere else. Thats a sunk cost like someone pointed out..youve paid it, but still have to put the best player out there. Once Simon is cleared, once Seisay is up to speed and coached up they will be given every opportunity to steal that starting position. Cary isnt bad, but so far..and obviously its still REALLY early, he is just a guy. With Jeremy Lane healing, and Tye Smith gaining experience.. all younger.. well... Not sure where Will Blackmon fits in all this. Interesting note.. last year as an UDFA Seisay was approached by the Seahawks but after he looked at the roster he thought he had a better chance of sticking with the Lions so signed with them. I thought that was mildly interesting.

Just heard Christine Michael is just under a million dollars for this year. Rawls would probably save half a million , and cap space is at a premium..so much so that it becomes a factor I think. TJack is 1.5 million vs. probably something like 1/2 million for Archer so that would have been awesome if Archer had been able to emerge as a legit #2 but that seems unlikely.

One more note.. from Day 6.. that I just heard. Today #19 Douglass McNeil III who is listed as a WR is practicing with the DBs. He is 6ft 3..I assume he is playing at CB but I wonder if they are giving him time at safety. As I wrote, I think safety is the position we have the least depth (other than punter and kicker!) and its not close.

As a Michael supporter anytime I hear that he took it to the house I'm going to convince myself he really took it to the house.

McNeill playing in the secondary is interesting.

Veta interesting take on Williams and I think you're probably right. In a best case scenario I wonder if they hope he isn't starting at some point. I think he fits our defense better than Philly's but its yet to be seen.
