I forget who it was who recovered that fumble.....but he apparently (according to the refs) had control, then fumbled before the goal line. They really didn't show a good view (like from the sideline cameras) of where the ball came out of his hands. But there was a change of possession, then a fumble, and a recovery in the end zone. To me the arguable part was whether he actually had possession to begin with. If he doesn't, then it's a safety. In my opinion, going by the same rules as a receiver establishing a catch, he didn't have full control.
I will point out that the box score only shows fumbles by Arroyo and Darnold. None by a defensive player.
I was more irate about the other safety they took away. Stroud was tackled in the end zone. He didn't have forward progress at all - he was running backwards. His knee came down when the ball was CLEARLY in the end zone. The "contact was made outside of the end zone, therefore the ball is down there" explanation is hogwash IMO.
