The fact that Geno just shredded one of the worst defenses in football. Just like Mariota played well against our Defense.

It goes both way. I'm loving what I'm seeing from Geno. But maybe pump the breaks on Geno is God talk that's all.

Not saying he is god, I am asking a question. I myself was on the Geno is trash train but his play has me thinking he might be very serviceable. So far he is passing the eye test.

Lions are 30th in the NFL in defensive spending. With a RC middle linebacker.

And Geno Smith played much better against them than the other three quarterbacks they've faced, which are Jalen Hurts, Carson Wentz, and Kirk Cousins. And Smith ($3.5M on the cap this year) is more expensive than Hurts ($1.643M on the cap), but a lot less expensive than Wentz ($27.23M on the cap) and Cousins ($31.4M on the cap).

Opponent quality does matter, but that doesn't mean a team's performance against a bad opponent, like the Smith-led Seahawks against the Jaguars last year or the Lions on Sunday, doesn't count. No other QB had a historic performance like Smith's against the Jags last year, and the Josh Allen-led Bills LOST to the same Jaguars just a week after Smith dismantled them. And nobody else has put up even 40 on the Lions this season (yet), much less the 48 the Seahawks scored.

I am going to enjoy this Geno ride as far as it goes, but not get to excited. Cause as Ted Lasso said "it's the hope that kills you"

I like that expectations are lower so that we can enjoy the positives. Geno's stye is less flashy but effective and economical.

We can throw out our heart medications needed because of slow starts and 4th quarter hero-ball. (Maybe we should have sent those meds to the Denver fans).

It’s crazy how much more fun your offense is to watch when you have a QB who trusts the pocket and actually STEPS UP INTO IT. Instead of instantly start spinning around hoping to
hit a home run playground football pass.

Nah, he does the run around in circles thing from time to time too. Many QB's do. There was a play in the 2nd half where he had plenty of time to get rid of the ball, but it ended an intentional grounding call. He had plenty of time to get rid of it.

They’ve given up more points in the first four games then anyone else in the history of the NFL.

Geno is being paid like a backup I’m not sure what this proves. You aren’t going to find lightning in a bottle every year with a backup QB.

The surest way to be in the mix for a SB every year is to draft a top QB and pay them when the time comes.

If he’s a fill in for a young future starter great. If the Seahawks sign him to a new contract I’ll be a little worried.

OK, but if so, a big part of that was giving up MORE to the Seahawks than to any of the other teams they've played. The Lions' other opponents scored 38 (Eagles), 27 (Commanders), and 28 (Vikings). The Seahawks scored 48.

Of course not. But the point is that the Seahawks, with a cheap QB, are playing better offense than teams that are paying their QBs a lot of money.

Interesting. So then most Super Bowl champions must have paid their QBs very well, right?
There is a clear line: 13.1% of the cap.
By your assertion, all Super Bowl champs would either have QBs on rookie contracts or vets making over 13.1% of the cap ("pay them when the time comes").
I'm not at all sorry to report to you that it's the other side of the 13.1% line that's the good place to be. No Super Bowl champion has ever paid its QB more than 13.1% of the cap. Since the current top of the market for QBs is around 20-24% of the cap, maybe "draft a top QB and pay them when the time comes" is not the surest way to Super Bowls and titles.

Yeah, I'd want Smith to have a full season as a league-average QB before I'd want the Seahawks to sign him to even a short-term (one-year or two-year) deal, and the price would have to be right. I still see Smith as a stopgap, even though he's been a damn good one so far. If Smith performs this well for the rest of the season, I don't want the Seahawks to pay him as much as he'll be able to get as a free agent after such a season, unless it looks like the Seahawks are close to contending and Smith is willing to take a short-term deal. Since Smith is over 30, I doubt he will be willing to take such a deal, and I'm pretty sure some team would be willing to give Smith 3+ years if he were to play this well all season.

No need to get dramatic here. I’m talking about over the last ten years or so and even those numbers have been skewed a bit by Tom Brady taking less money.

The QB market has changed dramatically over the last five years.

The guys that elevate their teams even on a bad day or with average coaching are going to be in the mix. From their you need some luck.

Those guys have been.
Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Tom Brady
RW
AR
Pat Mahomes
Josh Allen

It can happen with Nick Foles but it’s much harder IMO. The other guys give you a chance every year.

I still don't think Smith is even a medium-term solution, but his completion rate after four games is 77.3%, easily the highest in the league. ESPN says it's also the highest ever in the NFL through four games among QBs who attempted at least 125 passes in those four games, but 125 seems like a very arbitrary cutoff, so let's just stick with "easily the highest completion percentage in the league this season" for now.

The only other QB with a completion rate above 70% so far is Stafford, and Stafford has significantly fewer attempts and a significantly lower yards per attempt (8.1 for Smith vs. 6.0 for Stafford). Smith's ANY/A is 47% higher than Stafford's (7.36 for Smith, 5.02 for Stafford). Stafford still hasn't played his fourth game, because the Rams are on MNF later today.

So I still see Smith as a stopgap, but he's having one hell of a stopgap season. As I said before, if he's even league-average for the rest of the season, he deserves very serious consideration for Comeback Player of the Year.

So far so good with Geno. It's the QB position. No position gets more attention from fans, it has always been that way. If he can continue this against great defenses, very nice.
