That's true, but it's the visual that this signing represents makes me shake my head in disbelief. Irvin will turn 35 in less than three weeks, and he couldn't stop a runner when he was 24. Is our defense so bad that it makes this guy at his age appear as if he might be able to contribute to it?
Player coach, talking to the kids teaching.

If that were the rationale, then I might be able to buy it. But has anyone with the team said that was one of the reasons why he was brought in or are you just speculating?

We have a limited number of spots on the practice squad, and it's where teams sometimes find a diamond in the rough. They're not normally assigned to 35-year-old player-coaches. This defense is definitely in need of talent. We don't need player-coaches.

Who cares? He’ll be about as relevant as I am to the team.
Good point. It is sort of moot, isn't it?

I also hear that he won't hold his place on the PS very long, that we just happened to have a spot for him. Nevertheless, it's the irony that has me shaking my head.

Bruce Irvin is a decent run defender. He developed into a pretty damn good on-ball SAM. Probably doesn't have the sideline-to-sideline speed he used to, but he's competent.

Judging by his resume, that opinion of his abilities seems a bit inflated.

Since 2018, Irvin has played on 5 different teams, including a brief second stint with us, and he was never retained past one season.

But I won't waste a lot of time arguing what is likely a moot point as the chances of him getting promoted to the active roster seems pretty remote. I'm just noting the irony of the signing, that our D is so bad that we'd look to a 35 year old linebacker for our salvation.

It's not really ironic though?

And I'm confused about why this works you up, like... did you watch the last game? The fact that Taysom Hill ran for approximately 2.5 billion yards was the sign our defense is bad, not this signing.

Again, we have a deficit in terms of experience and on-field leadership. This is the only kind of move we can make to correct that without giving up draft picks or more. Experienced LBs who aren't already signed somewhere at this stage of the season typically fit Irvin's profile.

There are 32 head coaches who didn't sign him over the first five weeks of the season.
There were also 31 other teams AND SO-CALLED EXPERTS INCLUDING SEAHAWKS FANS that had Geno Smith rated as the worst Quarterback in the League, What's your point?

When you have little money to spend, this is a good option.

Luv Bruce but... We're talking about the practice squad.

PS should be used for players that can actually develop and turn into something in the future.

Make him a defensive coach if he's here to teach.

What I think this is, is they plan to get him in the rotation, but he needs to have his training camp first and get in football shape.

They are desperate at this point.

I'm not "worked up" about signing Irvin to the practice squad.

As far as his 'on field leadership' goes, it would seem to be pretty limited by being on the practice squad. I'd rather see them give that spot to some kid looking for a break.

You can be brought up from the practice squad a few times prior to needing to be placed on the main roster. Irvin is extremely likely to play. (I wouldn't be shocked if he plays against Arizona.)

EDIT: I guess Pete said he'd prefer to hold another week before Irvin plays, so I probably spoke too soon about Arizona that but very much sounds like they are planning for him to play.
