The hot or cold performances from week to week with the offense is most likely his responsibility . He can leave . IMO
This has been an issue ever since Pete Carroll had been a coach. Carroll even stated that 80 percent of the playbook was his. Carroll has his hands in all aspects of the Seahawks -- the same issues and criticisms that are brought against the Seahawks today have been brought up since 2010, and this is across 3 different coordinators. I remember many USC fans being displeased angered by the offense as well.
Carroll is a coach that likes to do what he's going to do regardless of a teams strength or weakness. He has a clear identity and he defaults to that. Occasionally he'll give his coordinators more breathing room, but ultimately control gets wrestled away. The offense in week 1-5 looked very differently from a structural point of view. We were running an offense that looked very similar to something Holmgren would be running. Short, quick passing game, when teams cheated up we'd throw a bomb to keep teams from cheating up. We'd spread out teams on the field and use that to create space in the running game. After that things changed. We started defaulting to more 5-7 step drops, long crossing routes, deep to intermediate dominated passing games.
In game Russell Wilson has also been going through one of his worst streaks of football. He's not seeing the whole field, against NYG for example there were some guys that were wide open. He just didn't see them and held onto the ball. He's also doing a bad job diagnosing the defense with his pre-snap reads. He seems to be getting confused by zone-blitzes, and varied coverage schemes. I think this is for a few reasons.
1. Russell Wilson is injured. He just doesn't seem to have the same kind of mobility and ability to start and stop. It seems like he's not fully able to plant on his throws either. I suspect something is wrong with him and it's being hidden. A lot of his balls just seem off, or don't seem to have the same umph as before.
2. Russell Wilson is not confident in his offensive line with Shell being out. His internal clock just seems off. We know his agility, and mobility isn't what it normally is right now. His pocket presence, internal clock, and mechanics all are showing someone who is hearing footsteps, and not confident.
3. Wilson putting too much pressure on himself. He's in a mode where every pass has to be a knockout pass. He's ignoring checkdowns and short routes. On one of his INT's a screen was blown up, and he forced the ball downfield. That is normally is a throw away scenario 9 times out of 10.
4. Offense has gone back to default Pete Ball. Long developing routes, 5-7 step drops while operating under a patchwork offensive line.
Given what we saw from Schottenheimer earlier in the year vs. what we're seeing now, I'd say Carroll has quite a bit to do with the offense we're running. I hated the hire at first, but at the very least I can say that Schottenheimer has been our best OC by far. If he gets a HC position we know we're just going to replace Schotteheimer with another yes man.
