Huh. And when Waldron started with his 'plan' - I thought it was PC holding him back from executing.
I was wrong. He just sucks apparently.
Yup.
Id wager the waldron hire went something like this:
Phone rings in the '20 offseason after we lose to the Rams in the wildcard...
Russ camp: Russell isnt happy with the offense and isnt going to be shy about it. We want a new coordinator.
Pete and John : we could have done more with what we had. Brian S. Sees room for improvement.
Russ Camp: No. Brian isnt innovative enough. We need explosiveness. We need something ala KC, SF, Rams... the McVay way. We want that for Russ and like i said, Russ is taking his frustration public until a change is made. And Russ wants a say in who comes in.
Pete on the phone with Schotty : Brian, we need you to consider being more explosive on offense.
Schotty: Seriously? We arent running the offense we have. Now you want me to modify what im doing to be 'more explosive'? If it was run the right way it would be plenty explosive. We dont need to change the plays, we need to run the plays.
Pete and John: so you are saying you wont do it?... ok, well Russ is trashing the team, calling out the O... me, you... we have to do something.
Schotty: Im not doing anything. You want different plays called, get someone else to call them.
Pete: understood. I think we will have to move on then. Thanks for everything. We will make a statement citing philiosphical differences as the reason for moving on. Ill give you whatever reference you need.
Schotty: Thanks and good luck.
Pete and John back on the phone with Russ's camp:
Ok. Schotty is out. Who do you have in mind?
Russ's camp: Somebody from McVay's inner circle. They embarrased us in thr playoffs with a scrub throwing the ball. Get whoever is helping draw up their stuff.
Pete and John : ok. We made some calls. The only guy at the board with Sean is this guy Shane Waldron. He hasnt done anything. He doesnt scheme the offense. We just know he works with Mcvay to design plays and put together gameplans. No other experience. We can put him on thr list but there are a few other candidates we think we want to bring in
Russ camp: no. He's the guy. Russ can work with him to create the plays and scheme on sunday. Russ has the experience to fill in what he doesnt know. We dont need another 'experienced' oc trying to tell Russ how to play. .
Pete : ok. If wr bring him in, Russ is good?
Russ camp : yeah.
And voila, Waldron is our OC and given full autonomy to craft the offense with Russ.
A year later, Russ is out and Shane goes on a 3 year skid on the road from offensive coordonator in the NFL, to soon-to-be passing game coordinator again... if he's lucky.
He was never qualified. He was a forced hire to appease RW3.
