I remember saying to my wife at the time: We need a first down. We don't want to turn it over to them at this point with 3 points here and 4 minutes ish on the clock.

And I was right.

They absolutely should have gone for it. Even just to make a statement to both the opposing team, and our own offense.

It's always about context. We were getting our arses kicked in just about every key stat category the whole game. If it wasn't for two blown FG's and two INT's, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Yet, in spite of it all, we had a chance there to come close to putting the game away. You take that chance.
You make a couple excellent points.

I've asked the question several times and no one has answered. If we were going to kick the FG, why in the hell didn't we at least line up as if to go for it and see if we can get them to jump and take the 5-yard delay of game penalty if they don't jump offside? For a veteran kicker like Jason Meyers, is there that big of a difference between a 37-yard FG attempt and one from 42 yards that it makes it a risk not worth taking?

I would say for a kicker like Meyers, no, it should not make that much of a difference. He's high percent good from well over 50. But he has trouble on short range ex pts more often than I like.

Might be an unpopular take…. But I was fine with points there and a lead based on how well defense and special teams played all day. The misplays on the ball by Riq were the most damning and unfortunate thing of it all. If those balls were played correctly by attacking the ball we might be having a different conversation.

So, judging by that answer, am I correct in assuming that you feel that Mac should have at least run his offense back out there and line up as if to go for it and if they couldn't draw the Niners offside to take the 5-yard delay of game penalty then kick the FG?

That's been one of the biggest beefs I've had with Mac's decision, not to at least try to pull the D offside and use the extra 30-45 seconds for the FG unit to get organized. It made a bad decision worse IMO.

Time management was not awesome in the 4th quarter. Not Pete bad but could have been a lot better. Especially late 4th.
