It's a great accomplishment in this day and age of offensive oriented football!

What's interesting is that entering today's action the Hawks weren't #1 in any of the defensive categories. In fact, they leaped from #3 in rushing and scoring defense to #1 in both rankings, based on what happened in Arizona today, as well as four other games. They also moved up from #3 to #2 in passing defense, by 2 yards over Houston, thanks to the final sack on Drew Stanton which comes off of the passing yardage total.

And the fact that these records were taken in a game against the #1 offense? And a Division Rival? In their house?

Sweetness.

Considering the schedule and some of the offenses we faced this year, AZ twice, GB, Bengals, Pittsburgh, that really is quite an accomplishment.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — If some of the Seahawks’ defensive players didn’t know that history lurked on the horizon, they had at least one teammate staring through binoculars.

“I knew exactly where we were,” cornerback Richard Sherman said.

It was Sherman who told safety Earl Thomas a few weeks ago that the Seahawks could finish with the fewest points allowed in the NFL for the fourth consecutive season. Only one other team, the 1950s Browns, had done that before.

And it was Sherman who tracked the scores of the two defenses ahead of the Seahawks entering Sunday’s game at Arizona. So on Sunday when Cincinnati allowed 16 points to Baltimore and Kansas City gave up 17 points to Oakland, Sherman knew the Seahawks could make history.

While watching the game, I had an inkling that Sherman was discussing this with an assistant coach, perhaps pleading to be put back in the game to ensure that the defense would secure its destiny.

I'm sure Pete knew where they stood and wanted it bad. Avril, Bennett and Irvin were all back in the game as soon as Arizona got in the redzone on their final drive. It had been mostly reserves up until that point.

On Seattle's last drive, Pete went for it on 4th-and-5 rather than kick a logical FG. The point? He'd rather take away any chance of a meaningless Hail Mary or return TD than take the three points.

#1 Scoring defense
#1 Rushing defense
#2 Passing defense (behind Denver, and 2 yards ahead of Houston)
#2 Total defense (behind Denver)

We can thank Cary Williams for us not being #1 across all four.

Let's hope that this is the final dagger into Cary Williams. The fellow did the best he could, but it was not up to Seahawks standards.
