I'll reserve judgement until I see the final preseason roster, but I gotta be honest, I'm thoroughly confused on the direction John and Mike are going here. 🤔

If Geno gets hurt next year and Howell wins the games he is out, was he worth it then?

Which, if we were already considering drafting a QB at that point, there isn't any guarantee he'd be better than Howell, who is only going to be 24.

This saves us from throwing a draft pick at a QB if we weren't thrilled with who we might have had a chance at and we get a 24-year-old with 2 years of NFL experience. Is it a great move? No. But I don't think it's terrible now that the initial shock is wearing off.
I LIKE Howell. I think he can be pretty damn good if he learns how to navigate a pocket.

I'm just annoyed that they reportedly always liked him, yet passed up on the chance to take him for a fifth in 2022 and have him developing in house OUR way for 2 years.

Instead they wait for him to self-destruct in a terrible organization and pay twice as much in draft capital to undo that damage while also losing half his rookie contract.

Just so, so annoyed by the process there.

Meh, you're taking this way too seriously.

Ok, I've had a few minutes to let it sink in. This still makes no sense. Ugh. WTF!
I gotta say, I'm really confused by you having this viewpoint considering the discussions we've had prior about having to keep taking chances at the spot regardless of circumstance.

I think I'm ok with it. You drop down 20sh? picks or so and maybe Howell's tape suggests he has the potential to be really good. He did throw for 4,000 yards last year I think on a bad team without any weapons? I seem to always be contrarian lately and maybe its driving this but I like it.

Why are we giving up draft picks for this, especially a 3rd round
The 4th rder were getting back is not that far from our 3rd the Hawks gave up. Howell almost threw for 4000 yards on a shit Commanders team and he's making 985K this year. I'm very ok with this choice. Wasn't even aware Quinn was shopping him.

This is all fair and I somewhat agree.

I think there are downsides to this. For one, I think it'd be (most likely) a mistake to start Howell but he was a full-time starter last year so he's definitely gotta be in contention for it. But if you don't start him, he'll have spent half of his remaining contract (at least) as a backup which could be problematic when decisions need to be made for 2025 or 2026.

Also, I'm worried that they might still try and draft a QB but now go later rounds with it (Jordan Travis or Michael Pratt, maybe?) which would really confuse me.

Thanks for point that out. It's not like they gave up a high 3rd and got nothing back. They gave up a very late 3rd and got the 4th that's really not that many picks later.

To be fair, 78 is about twice as valuable (probably slightly more) than 102. We are legitimately losing about a late third of value overall.

To be clear, 78 is pick number 14 in the third round. It's in the top half of the round.

Oh wow, I even brought up this possibility in a thread earlier. Had court dates in two different counties today, no jail time in either, and now we traded for a player I've been wanting... good day for me!

This is a fantastic trade! Howell has an NFL arm and abilities; took a lot of hits last year, but I've been saying for a while that I think he's legit!
I'm with you, I've thought he looked pretty damn good at times last year. Behind a good line with a running game and receiving weapons, might be a good situation to bring out his best.
