Arthur Smith is going to use a lot of play action and a heavy dose of a ground game like SP was doing last season. I think the difference is that the Steelers have a better cast at TE and WR and will be adding more talent on offense from the draft since they are shopping Johnson and they are going to continue to fortify their OL.

Now our two Superb0wl losses have a common quarterback connection.

How do the Patriots factor in here?

I went there too when I read @Hawkspeed's comment. I even wondered if he was confusing two different QBs who in the last few days we learned will be with new teams in 2024 - Mac Jones going to the Jaguars and Russell Wilson going to the Stealers. But I think the idea is that the guy who threw the game-winning interception to the Seahawks' opponent in XLIX is now the QB for the team that was the Seahawks' opponent in XL.

He’s looking forward for that butt ramming from that Ravens defense twice a year, I assume.

Hey Guys,

Since I live in Germany and therefore don't get the flood of media, I have a question. From today, Monday, the FA's are officially allowed to negotiate with new teams and sign a contract from Wednesday. But how can it be that safety Kevin Byard has already signed with the Bears or Mitch Trubisky with the Bills? Can anyone explain to me? Same now with Wilson and the Steelers.

Thank you! <3

Called it. SO fitting.

This is hilarious. Another season of entertaining antics.

I guess I’m the only one lol. I hope he makes Payton and Denver pay. Rooting for him. He was still fairly good last year and probably has better receivers this year.
Well, you're the only one with balls enough to admit it. This is a decidedly anti Wilson crowd.

It's lucky I didn't put any money on my hunch. I had him going to the Pats.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Kenny Pickett. It was just a few weeks ago that the Steeler camp was not ready to move away from him. Does this signing change that thinking? Is Pickett on the trading block?

Pittsburgh made the playoffs last season, so they can reasonably expect this edition to be a Super Bowl contender. However, they play in the most competitive division in football, with the division champs sporting last season's best W/L in the league, all 4 teams finishing over .500, and an AFC North team having gone to the conference championship game for the past 3 straight seasons.

Russell's going to have to change his game if he's to be successful. He's going to have to get the ball out of his hands much quicker than he has in the past. The Pittsburgh OL had a tough season last year in pass protection. PFF had them ranked as the 2nd worst pass blocking unit in the league while Denver's was ranked 5th. A hesitant QB is only going to make things worse unless the line improves or Russell changes is style. It's been his weakness throughout his entire career.

The Steelers have a good defense and a strong running game, so they have the makings to take that next step and become a legitimate contender, so Russell could catch lightning in a bottle and make the SB run that he's been dreaming of.

But on the other hand, if he doesn't catch on with the Steelers, it's likely that his career as a starter is over.

t's going to be an interesting drama to watch unfold.

No brainer move for the Steelers. The problem with Russ the last few years here and in Denver was about paying elite QB money for middling QB play. Paying veteran minimum money for a starting QB is amazing value. They are going to run the ball and Wilson won't need to be a volume passer. The Steelers also end up with all the leverage in the new arrangement so it can be their way or the highway.

The Steelers should still draft a QB this year to sit and develop. Kenny Pickett has had plenty of chances and isn't the guy, and this cheap Russ contract is a one year thing only.

I'm not rooting for or against Russ here particularly since I dislike both Broncos and Steelers fans. It seems equally funny to me for Russ to flop on the Steelers, or for him to ball out and leave Denver fans even more upset.
This is really not much different than the Geno Smith-to-Seattle dynamic. The Steelers aren't investing in him as their future. They just hope for some competent QB play for a tiny contract. If he plays well, maybe they consider a moderately-sized extension. If not, he serves as a bridge. The Steelers will have more contract leverage over him at that point than typical because Wilson won't want to go to a fourth team and start over again (in the scenario that he has some success).

The Steelers I do not view as giving up on Pickett unless they spend a high pick on a QB this year via the draft. They probably feel that Pickett needs more time to sit and learn which is reasonable.

Pickett has a winning QB percentage and he has only started 24 NFL games. In context the rule of thumb is you can not judge a QB starter until they have made two full seasons or around 32-34 NFL games.

His TD to INT ratio is 1:1 like many other young QBs that struggle early in their careers. But his completion percentage is very respectable and he has room for growth.

Unless they trade up, the Steelers would be looking at a 2nd tier quarterback if they want to draft one. He'd be just as much as a gamble of his becoming their QB of the future as Pickett. My guess is that they stick with Pickett as a backup, at least until the trading deadline.

@Germanhawk7 Yeah, as SantaClaraHawk says, they were released and free to talk to other teams. In Wilson’s case he was granted permission by Denver to talk to others, even though he’s technically still on the Broncos pay list. It always gets a bit blurry at this time. A lot of ‘signings’ from last week etc are actually only signed on paper from today.

Technically, not until Wednesday on paper.

You know, the Twitter that me3 sent out needs To be reined in right now. I mean, it’s not like these fans were or are cheering for Wilson. It is up to the Steelers social media to put that shit up.
