So how do we ever draft a top 3 qb?

Drafting a top 3 qb doesn't typically involve jumping from the middle of the draft to top 5.

Just recently Pickett was the first qb taken at 22 or whatever

How many of the top QB's in the league were actually taken top 5?

Lamar, Rodgers, Love, Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, Watson (I don't think anyone saw that coming, but the talent was obviously there)

Off the top of my head in recent years, and this is ONLY QB's picks 6-32

No 2nd round+, no top 5

It doesn't need to be THE guy or some hidden gem.

There are 5 maybe 6 QB's in this class alone that would have gone BEFORE 20-22 range where Pickett went first a couple years ago

Some of the best quarterbacks have been first round picks and sat the bench their first year.
what you would need to give up in order to Draft Maye would force your hand. At best he sits the first few games Behind someone other than Geno . Cause Geno would be included in the trade to get Maye.

I don't think it would force our hand if we did include Geno in a trade to get Maye. We could resign Lock and have Maye sit the year, then start him next year.

This is the only situation I'd consider a Geno trade in. If it makes it a lot easier to acquire Maye if that pick is indeed for sale (for a reasonable-ish price), and if John is in love with Maye.

It isn’t as if it will be an even swap. it took 3 first round picks and then some to move from 12 to 3 in the 2021 draft for the niners to draft Trey Lance. The only reason he didn’t start was because he hadn’t played in over a year prior to the season due to Covid.

Either way I wouldn't do it for Maye.

He would seem to be the perfect fit if you're keeping Geno because he needs a year or two. I really like him as well but not sure they are in a position to get him. Maybe they move DK or something and generate some draft capital?
Oh man…I cringe at DK trade comments but, if JS feels like Maye or Daniels is QBotF material, count me in.

Spot on with being a perfect fit PNW. I think Geno would be an excellent guy to sit behind and learn. His play style IS teachable…unlike a guy like Mahomes or Jackson.

He has had a "high" pick so seldomly; when has a top QB prospect even been available to him? He has picked in the top half of the first round in three drafts, and in each, the next QB to go off the board wasn't until significantly later.

2010 (picks 6, 14): next QB was Tim Tebow at 1.25, followed by Jimmy Clausen at 2.48
2012 (pick 15): next QB was 28-year-old Brandon Weeden at 1.22, followed by Brock Osweiler at 2.57
2023 (pick 5): next QB was Will Levis at 2.33, followed by Hendon Hooker at 3.68

I thought I read that he had to be talked out of taking Russ much higher than he ended up going too. I don't think he necessarily has any philosophy about not drafting QBs early, the ideal situation for it just hasn't come up. I doubt he would have passed on Stroud had he fallen to us last year. He didn't have high picks in Green Bay either, and if he had, they had Aaron Rodgers on the team anyway.

I think it's more likely he's just talking to these guys in case one of them has an unexpected draft day fall and becomes available in a more reasonable trade-up spot. Like if New England addresses QB prior to the draft, they could pass on Maye/Daniels and take Marvin Harrison Jr at 3, and then neither the Cards nor Chargers are likely to take a QB in the two picks after. Regardless, it's not like they have a limited number of combine interviews.
Gawtdamn…I like the sound of Arizona NOT getting Harrison Jr.

I feel like that guy is going to be torching the league for a loooong time.

That's who I'd trade up for, cost be damned. Love DK, but I'd be willing to sacrifice him to realize my wet dream of a MHJ - JSN tandem reborn on the Hawks.
