I wouldn't say 3/19.5 with just $10 million guaranteed was "very rich at the time". His market was small initially and he only later became a fallback option after Peyton Manning wouldn't take our calls. Us and the Dolphins are the only teams that even hosted a visit with Flynn. In that same offseason, Alex Smith signed for 4/94 and the Jets gave Mark Sanchez an extension of 3/40. I think teams were afraid of getting burned again after the Kevin Kolb disaster with the Cardinals.

He's an exciting prospect, but my concern is that he takes a LOT of hits. His sack numbers are borderline embarrassing. I could see him being one of those guys who makes his OL look worse than it is.

I struggle with Maye. He's super raw and probably closer to Will Levis than anyone else. The footwork and accuracy can be a huge problem.

With that said. I think Maye in a few seasons could be awesome. He has the arm and legs. I don't think I like him enough to trade up for him. For me, there is a lack of pocket awareness and lack of game feel. We'll see if he develops them.

As of this moment, I'm out on Maye. I would be willing to trade up for Jayden Daniels though.

Then you watch his very last game against NC State and he does a lot of questionable things. He has a lot of intriguing qualities that is worthy of a first selection.

However, he is not a dude right now. This is my opinion. He is going to do a lot of things that will drive NFL coaches crazy. The one read and then take off. The sloppy footwork. The awkward release sometimes. The lack of feel sometimes for the QB position. He's pretty raw.

Mahomes benefitted greatly from his year on the bench. He was raw and somewhat erratic coming out. His first action came in preseason that year and then a regular season game where Alex Smith was resting as they had clinched. This low-pressure year of valuable reps and acclimation almost surely paved the way for his instant league-breaking success.

Aaron Rodgers famously sat for years behind Favre. I don't need to tell you what happened there.

Love sat for years behind Rodgers. Love is now pretty damn good. Late first rounder there.

Josh Allen was forced into action too quickly when Nathan Peterman shat his pants in legendary fashion. He had a terrible first year. After being given an offseason to develop and then 2019 to figure it out (fun fact: he posted Geno Smith's exact TD/INT ratio from 2023 in his 2019 year), he became Josh Allen. Interestingly, Allen and Maye? Decent amount of similarity there in playstyle.

If top-3 picks like Lawrence and Wilson had been provided a bit more time and development, maybe they wouldn't be quite as underwhelming as they are despite their athletic talent.

There is so, so much precedent supporting the general idea that you ideally want to provide a rookie quarterback as much runway as you can to acclimate to the NFL before pushing them into game action.

So yeah. Maybe Maye doesn't need to ride the bench. His career would probably be better off if he does ride it for a bit regardless, and I've got a lot to back that one up.

Actually, Geno's statistics last year (considered a down year by most) would equate to Alex Smith's second best season in his entire career. Geno's 2022 would be comparable to Smith's 2017 campaign.

I also don't think Grubb being a rookie OC helps the case of throwing a rookie in right away. I think it actually makes Geno's role as a competitive bridge starter even more crucial to the team. That experience is needed. Rookie HC, Rookie OC, Rookie DC, and Rookie QB is probably quite a bit too much inexperience to go through for a crucial tone-setting year 1.

Regardless, the point isn't to compare Geno to Alex Smith. It's to illustrate how face-of-the-league quarterbacks have very often benefitted from coming in as a QB2 and being given time to learn and grow.

We grab a guy with a solid mindset, clean bill of health, and the upside to grow into a star - and then we slow roll him. Patiently develop him. Set him up for success when the time comes.

It's hard to draft a top-3 quarterback even with the number 1 overall pick in any given year. Even if you've got an Andrew Luck type of class. It's all about the environment we create for those guys to develop and flourish.

You may not get a top-3 that way, but you have very little chance of getting one even with all of King Midas's gold and draft picks. What you're much more likely to get is a guy that can play well enough to win some serious games for you if a winning team is built aside from that QB.
