John is doing his due diligence to extend Spoon and with C. Gonzalez also represented by Win Sports Group and the Patriots likewise in negotiations, it's all interconnected.

A reminder, we selected Witherspoon with our top pick (#5) in the RW3 trade in the 23' draft in which the Patriots took Christian Gonzalez at 17 overall. If it had been up to me I might have opted for the size & coverage skills of Gonzalez, but like Emmanwori, Spoon's versatility, fierceness, elite competitiveness and scheme fit was the deciding factor. Three Pro Bowls and a second team All-Pro selection leave little doubt about his importance to us if we can afford him and his trade value.

The good news is we can likely keep #21 for the next three years if an agreement is not reached.

26'- 10M
27'- 21M
28'- 23M (franchise tag)
That would be $18M average over 3 years.

I think with elite players as with Spoon being so highly competitive, that may be reflective to a desired contract. A prolonged negotiation may not result in more $ and the injury factor and importance of competing for Super Bowls should also be weighed.
You don't see many players taking a little less to help the team and these new high contract #'s are getting to the point where maintaining a roster at a dynasty level can't be done without elite drafting. I think it's ironic that players view being paid top dollar as a matter of elite status or respect when the true measure is SB wins and ultimately a HOF ending which are hard to reach without being on a top tier team.

This seems like the most important contract negotiation since Charles Cross, luckily John has time and one of his strong suits is drafting cornerbacks.
Moving forward we will not be able to re-sign everyone. There is some comfort knowing we have John at the helm and whoever stays wants to be here for the right reasons.

1) McDuffie Rams 31M
2) Gardner Jets 30M
3) Stingley Texans 30M
4) Horn Panthers 25M
5) Ramsey/Surtain 24M

Dealing with agents & contract negotiations are a necessary evil and unavoidable consequence that becomes more pronounced with winning and a top roster.
The Seahawks have come a long way over the years, first world problems and all.

Next guy up, he'll get a huge deal, and it'll be worth it. Plus, with the way the cap is jumping each year, AND with how much they have in cap space? Not a problem.

He also saved our SB birth with TWO massive plays in the end zone. All while saving Reek from going down as the all-time biggest moron.

Also, this isn't some angry player thing going on. He is at voluntary workouts. This is the business side of thing. Spoon impacts the game in a LOT more ways than the stats. People are way too caught up on the numbers. He brings a LOT more to the table.
Spoon is to the Defense what JSN is to the Offense.

I'm always more ready to listen to former players and their assessment of Spoon. He does SO much more than some silly stat sheet.

Imagine being so stupid that you make a big play, then you CHOOSE to talk smack to Matt fricken Stafford.
Dude is a cold-blooded killer. And look what happened on the next play.
Beware an old man in a profession where young men usually don't make it. After getting three doses of Stafford last year, I became a believer that he was the best QB in the League. Cowherd and Middlekauff were talking about it and his numbers against the Hawks and our #1 defense tell you everything you really need to know.

And, yeah, our resident Rocket Surgeon decided to run his c*ck holster and get him all gassed up. At least Stafford and Puka exacted revenge on Riq and not some other poor sap the next play.

How much are we expecting to pay Spoon? He is so versatile, but you can’t pay everyone. Derwin James just got a big contract, meaning in 2 years (since he was a 2nd rounder, we should pay him after year 3. Don’t want him hitting the FA market) we will be paying Nic E more than James got. So do you tie up that much money on a CB and Safety?

Spoon is one of the best if not there best corner in the league. He's a dawg. Going into the off-season I figured JSN and Spoon would both get extended. Spoon's deal should be done before camp starts that way they can focus on any possible free agent additions like possibly Clowney as a late signee

Spoon is a force multiplier.
Those are the ones you retain.

I’m not arguing he is t one of the best, not best though. But paying him $35-38 mill and Emmanwori $30 mill. Is a lot of money locked up in the secondary

As one of the GM"s biggest ops, he drafts well and he pays well. He doesn't over pay (too often).

Mike M is probs the best in the business on defense, and I am sure they have talked this over.

The Seahawks have a huge leverage here, they don't have to get this done this year. Now if spoon wants that long term cash, cool, but he will have to give up a little something

He will get his deal, and 2 years from now it will look like a bargain. This isn't something new, imo.
We all have our takes on it, but he's one hell of a player and I can't see any possible way they don't sign him to an extension before the season starts.

Gonzalez had a legit argument as the true MVP of last season's Super Bowl. I'm sure he will demand a high premium for that, and I'm sure that someone will pay it.
But he made one play. The other plays were bad throws. And if Darnold hit them better he would have given up over 100 yards and two TD’s. So he would be labeled as a bust.

I thought he played good. But at least 2 of his PBUs were due to later throws by Sam as a result of good pressure up front. That's complimentary football for sure. But he was beaten on those plays at first. The recovery was good of course but
Nah, he made a lot more than one play. That's a 30-point blowout without him.
I think he was burned a couple times but was bailed out by bad/late throws by Sam. But he is definitely a good player and did his job overall.
