John is doing his due diligence to extend Spoon and with C. Gonzalez also represented by Win Sports Group and the Patriots likewise in negotiations, it's all interconnected.
A reminder, we selected Witherspoon with our top pick (#5) in the RW3 trade in the 23' draft in which the Patriots took Christian Gonzalez at 17 overall. If it had been up to me I might have opted for the size & coverage skills of Gonzalez, but like Emmanwori, Spoon's versatility, fierceness, elite competitiveness and scheme fit was the deciding factor. Three Pro Bowls and a second team All-Pro selection leave little doubt about his importance to us if we can afford him and his trade value.
The good news is we can likely keep #21 for the next three years if an agreement is not reached.
26'- 10M
27'- 21M
28'- 23M (franchise tag)
That would be $18M average over 3 years.
I think with elite players as with Spoon being so highly competitive, that may be reflective to a desired contract. A prolonged negotiation may not result in more $ and the injury factor and importance of competing for Super Bowls should also be weighed.
You don't see many players taking a little less to help the team and these new high contract #'s are getting to the point where maintaining a roster at a dynasty level can't be done without elite drafting. I think it's ironic that players view being paid top dollar as a matter of elite status or respect when the true measure is SB wins and ultimately a HOF ending which are hard to reach without being on a top tier team.
This seems like the most important contract negotiation since Charles Cross, luckily John has time and one of his strong suits is drafting cornerbacks.
Moving forward we will not be able to re-sign everyone. There is some comfort knowing we have John at the helm and whoever stays wants to be here for the right reasons.
1) McDuffie Rams 31M
2) Gardner Jets 30M
3) Stingley Texans 30M
4) Horn Panthers 25M
5) Ramsey/Surtain 24M
Dealing with agents & contract negotiations are a necessary evil and unavoidable consequence that becomes more pronounced with winning and a top roster.
The Seahawks have come a long way over the years, first world problems and all.
