He's a third or fourth round talent IMO. A guard might have been the better choice in the second round.
On the pick, I think when Sam analyzes the tape, he'll rethink what he saw and his choice to even throw the ball, and he'll certainly regret throwing it high and extra mustard instead of to Arroyo's body.
Are Arroyo's hands a little suspect? Or is it 100% on Sam?
It seems like AJ Barner cleanly catches everyball thrown to him.
Darnold blamed himself. He said his throw to Arroyo was too high, and not into Arroyo’s body where the 6-foot-5, 254-pound tight end could have boxed out the smaller Terrell (6-1, 200).
“Elijah’s such a big body. I feel like I left that one kind of high for him,” Darnold said. “If I could just get that one down, he could box out almost like a rebound in basketball and get the ball.”
He's going for the chunk yardage instead of being a check down Charlie. I'd rather he be aggressive than a dink-and-dunk Alex Smith type. Here's what Sam had to say about it :
Sounds like Sam was hell-bent on getting the ball to Arroyo no matter what.
It was like "Yeah I see you, K9, but I chose Arroyo as my target on this play so there." or something.
I mean...I get it.He's going for the chunk yardage instead of being a check down Charlie. I'd rather he be aggressive than a dink-and-dunk Alex Smith type.
Good QBs need to be able to do both and pick which one when the situation calls for it.He's going for the chunk yardage instead of being a check down Charlie. I'd rather he be aggressive than a dink-and-dunk Alex Smith type.
Unless it’s a fake blinker action, ya know, trying to trick the other driver into thinking your gonna turn so he slows down and then you zoom past him with your finger out the windowIf the receiver has his blinkers on.. he better turn, cause that's what the QB is expecting... they practice that and at that professional level they need to follow the rules. I maybe wrong, never the less, there are good drivers and there are bad drivers...don't be a bad driver![]()
Yep. I hate seeing the qb throw the ball where the guy is supposed to be when he knows the guy ain’t gonna get there. Very geNoesqueGood QBs need to be able to do both and pick which one when the situation calls for it.
True it's a risk/reward. The better option there is definitely hitting the checkdown or running for the first.I mean...I get it.
I know what Darnold was going for.
But in that situation...when you're deep in your own side of the field, you need to continue to move the chains instead of taking unnecessary risks there.
It didn't cost them but had this been the Rams (for example), they are at least going to get a FG out of that pick because they get a short-field.
Sam needs to be a bit more judicious in his throws.
Being a Checkdown charlie at times is preferable to throwing picks.
Fair enough.True it's a risk/reward. The better option there is definitely hitting the checkdown or running for the first.
Just in general though, you want a QB who can thread the needle. That JSN goal post dunk TD for example threaded the needle perfectly between two defenders. You want a QB who is capable of and isn't afraid to do that.
Arroyo one, not ideal, but still hit the receiver in the hands.
Which is all well and good until he gets hit or landed on badly on a run and we are suddenly riding with Drew the rest of the way. I winced on his first down run y'day when the defender landed on him during the tackle. It's defo a balance thing of course, having the threat of a QB run keeps the defense honest and if sprinkled in occasionally is potentially highly valuable.Fair enough.
BTW, I think what will truly take Sam to the next level is if he begins to RUN A LOT MORE like he did in this game.
If opposing Defenses have to plan for Darnold scrambling for first downs, it can only open things up even more for Sam and may actually get him going from the get-go.
His 2nd time running he did it the right way in sliding, though.Which is all well and good until he gets hit or landed on badly on a run and we are suddenly riding with Drew the rest of the way. yes, that one was a good slide with 3 defenders getting ready to knock his head off!His 2nd time running he did it the right way in sliding, though.
OMG The ghost of Charlie Whitehurst lives on in the heads of .NET members! He's going for the chunk yardage instead of being a check down Charlie. I'd rather he be aggressive than a dink-and-dunk Alex Smith type.
Both those throws were on the QB a TE can only run his route it's up to the QB to throw the ball to him, and both were poor decisions by the QB..
I liked Fannin so much I had him in my mock draft write-up. He really fit the Seahawks hard-nose smashmouth vibe and I would've LOVED seeing him in a Seahawks uniform.Taking Elijah Arroyo over Harold Fannin Jr. made 0 sense. A dude with no production at all to his name vs a guy who had insane production.
