Have trick plays become Kubiak's "great white whale"?

THIS!

Do the funny cutesy stuff WHEN THE GAME no longer is in the balance!

That way if the inevitable disaster happens, it won't matter.

Doing it at that moment mattered and it cost us 7 points potentially.

Had we gone up 21-0 there, this game (with our defense was playing) was virtually over.
The beauty of a good trick play is when you do it cause you need it and you steal the momentum.. it should be the last thing anyone would do

I just don't get it at all, I heard a couple of podcasters say they didn't hate the playcall, and I'm like what?... We were up 14 points moving the ball fine and Klint feels the need to get cute and try a trick play?... Why make a WR throw the ball? I can agree to it if we're having trouble moving the ball, but come on dude don't kill drives like this... and, that was a terrible decision by Kupp, JSN wasn't even close to being open enough on the play to justify the throw, just throw it away...

This falls under the complaint of "don't take the ball out of your QB's hands."
The QB knows better than anyone what to do with the ball and when. Their job is to be the point guard of the team. No one else on offense is trained to make a decision on when to throw to a receiver and when to throw it away.

Now is the part where I say getting cute doesn't work. Then I get told I'm exaggerating and that "cute" isn't the word for it. Yes, it is. And it's still stupid.

I'm 100% sure if the play had worked, everyone whiner in here would be saying what a brilliant call.

Fans are way too outcome obsesses when it comes to assessing a play call. Sometimes the players execute poorly or the defense guesses right.

There are two times to try a trick play: 1) When you are having your way with a team and the risk of a bad outcome is less likely to hurt you or 2) when you are being manhandled and need to try to change momentum.

This was the former situation. We tried it, didn't work and now we can mothball that play knowing Kupp doesn't have the smarts not to throw the ball into tight coverage. And it didn't cost us the game.

While I agree overall with your post, I will disagree on the coverage. The ball was way overthrown, like 5 yards downfield from the intended receiver. I'm not ballistic over the call, but I am disappointed in the execution.

I admit that JSN was open enough for a QB to throw that ball. I don't think he was open enough for a WR to throw that ball. "Tight" is a relative term in this instance.

Moving the ball at will.........let's just call some stupid trick play........again :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Stupid call, worse execution. There is NO reason for that to be called, esp. when you're in FG range already. He did the same exact thing in the Bucs game. The same Bucs game that the Hawks scored TD'S in 5 CONSECUTIVE DRIVES. But hey, let's call an option play to a rookie and ruin what was likely another TD drive.

Or maybe it’s the execution. An on target throw from Coop and we all might be saying, “Yeah!! The trick pony finally flew!!”
I was pissed when he did it but honestly after re-watching it, it was actually a decent play and its all there for Kupp to just make a decent throw and he airmailed it.

His timing seems odd to me because it seems to be when Darnold is rolling so I don't see the need really, but my guess is Macdonald and him are talking and they will get on the same page with it.

Their thought process has to be that the play was unexpected, and I suppose it was. i think we are conditioned to be annoyed at the failure of these plays cause that’s all we keep seeing is disaster every time they try a weird play. So the real issue with the play is the failure, it’s like never make the last out trying to take third, but if you do try you better make it…

It's just why you don't ask a non-QB to throw the ball. Can't expect them to be accurate. They tried it with DJ Dallas vs SF one time and that was cringe back then, and it's still cringe now.

Just remember that some trick plays are about putting stuff on film for opponents to think about. And then it can be used against them. Just think next time Kupp comes around and Darnold fakes the toss and hits Barner on the backside because everyone followed Kupp and JSN.

I'm not a fan of the reverse option play myself. Much prefer the flea flicker. But every trick play has some value no matter how successful or not.

Just 1/2 way through the highlights as I was watching the ALCS last night instead of the stupidly scheduled double header MNF.

Kubiak needs to stop being cute. That Kupp pick was just stupid. No reason for that gadget shit when you're up 14.

Ok then, how bout up three scores? Thats when it becomes more affordable to do it.
