He's Lamar Jackson 2.0" or some nonsense.

Anyway, hopefully JS doesn't do anything stupid like Kwesi (Vikings GM) did and kick Darnold to the curb in favor of a younger QB just 'cause they drafted him (ie Kwesi / McCarthy).

I recently took a look and what really surprised me was "NYJ Darnold" wasn't even that bad. As a 21-year old rookie (2018), he threw for 2,865 yards, 17 TDs, and 15 INTs. The next year (2019) he went for 3,024 yards, 19 TDs, and 13 INTs. Those are respectable young QB numbers. His third year (the weird Covid year) went sideways and he was shipped off to Carolina shortly thereafter. His HC in 2019/20 was Adam Gase, who never had a coaching job again. His OC those two years was Dowell Loggains, who is the current HC of Appalachian State. The wrong teams fail these young QBs just as much (if not more) than the other way around.

This just proves that coaching is so much more important in the NFL than people tend to give credit to. Darnold was immensely talented at USC and came into a disaster of an organization in NY. Even while there he wasn't bad, he just didn't carry the team - everyone got fired and caused him to bounce around fighting for another starting job. Learned from Shanahan in SF, learned even more from KOC in Minnesota. Now he's looking like a top 10 guy on a young team where when asked to carry them, he comes through every time. Looks like he's the guy for many more years to come.

Its not even just Sam though - look at Baker, Daniel Jones, etc. There are so many talented dudes that flame out because of terrible coaching. waaay too high of expectations year 1, or having to re-learn a new OC's system every 2 years.

yeah but "NYJ Sam Darnold" primarily refers to the "I See Ghosts" year where he threw a bajillion INTs.

That's what the stupid media is using to forever continue to drive the Darnold-will-fail narrative.

Tim Ryan was asked by me what he thinks of Sam. Tim told me he is damn good. Has a rifle of an arm and a great quarterback. Tim is the radio voice of the 49ers. I would say that what is going on right now is proof that Tim was right. Tim played for the Bears before being a 49er and the voice of them. Have a nice day.

I had a Vikings fan in my office today and we talked Darnold. He and, according to him, most Vikes fans thought Darnold last year was a fluke and it was mostly due to him having such great weapons and KOC right there.

Those same fans are currently wishing they had Darnold back - they guy even went so far as to say he sees Darnold doing things with the Hawks that he really didn't think he was capable of. Total calm in the face of pressure - evading pressure and making plays - running effectively when required. Making ELITE decisions with the football.

The Optics on Geno were not positive. He seemed sullen, and withdrawn. Contrast this with Slingin' Sam, his persona seems to be determination, and all business. DK and Geno to me seemed the same, taking plays off, which if you watched the Seahawks season, Sam never takes a play off. WE WON in so many ways Jan 2025 to today. We have Our Nigba, and a resolute and all business Coach and QB. Not to slight any others. I would have been happy with the season if we didn't go to the Superb Owl, I still will be happy if we have a sad outcome there. We have a young team, young Coach, and in totallity, a positive roster. LOVE me some Hawks

I'm a little less black and white on the Geno offer and the Plan B signing of Sam. I think there was more gray to this story, though I could be wrong in my supposition. I don't think either MM or JS were enamored with Geno, didn't think he was a good leader, or fit into the culture they were building. They were in a bind at QB, however, and they clearly felt that Sam was going to be the best available alternative to Geno out there.

IMO, JS was clearly in contact with Sam's agent at the earliest possible time (perhaps even sooner lol) because Sam was signed in a nanosecond when the Geno thing hit a wall. In other words, I think that contract for Sam was pretty much locked and loaded before the Geno thing hit the wall. I think JS had a reasonably good idea that the contract they offered Geno could well be unsatisfactory to him with all the "outs" and lack of longer term security it offered him. JS doesn't seem stupid about such things to me.

Of course there were three moving parts to this little drama: Geno refusing the contract; trading Geno to the Raiders; and signing Sam. The suddenness by which all these things took place just seemed fishy to me. We may never know exactly what was going on behind the scenes at this time, but I can't help but think this was more where they wanted it to end up than the current narrative would have us believe.

Again, this is just a supposition on my part.
