Close Games Are The Rule, Not The Exception In The NFL

These are not the only reasons this game was close. There’s a lot of blame to go around. Self inflicted wounds played a big role and blaming Meyers for missing that 53 yard FG is silly. Those aren’t automatic.

Maybe don’t throw a ball at a dude on 3rd and 3 in FG range, or fumble on an interception return, or engage on a block with a defender irrelevant to a run play for a TD, or drop easy money picks all game long.

They definitely weren’t sharp but they did get the W and don’t have to play on Thursday again this season.

• Seattle Seahawks: 27:44

Final score, a laughingly lopsided Seahawks dominant win of 44-13.

ToP is the most misleading, ridiculous statistic in football, IMO. You don't need to "control the ball", you need to control the damn score and outcome of the game, very different things which should stop getting correlated with each other.

Disagree. You only have those types of games when special teams are putting points on the board. Call it a special teams outlier.

In general, you want to control possession of the ball, which limits the other team's opportunities to score.

TOP is not determinative, but it can be indicative. I still find it to be a useful stat as long as it isn't overemphasized.

The Saints game was a bit of an outlier and shows how things like ST scores and turnovers can skew the TOP numbers. NFL teams are all capable of scoring quickly under the right circumstances. But winning TOP is generally a good thing if you can do it.

Time of possession to me oftentimes reflects what defenses were able to get the opposing offenses off the field on 3rd down, and what teams were able to extend drives. That seems pretty important to me.

Why do we continually get surprised by this fact? I've already watched game after game this season where people have remarked that the game shouldn't have been as close as it was. The Ravens should have easily won that game against the Bills. No way the Packers should have lost to the Browns. How did the Eagles ever end up beating the Rams in that game? Etc...

Guess what? NFL games are usually close. You should be happy whenever you win one. Like we did tonight. Good teams figure out how to win them. We did so.

Rams lost the game when McVay got conservative at the end of the Q2. Agree.
