The first Seahawk to wear #1 was kicker Efren Herrera. He was a 1974 7th round pick of the Lions. They released him in training camp and the Cowboys signed him. He played for the Cowboys from 74-78.
On August 14, 1978 Herrera was traded from the Cowboys to the Seahawks in exchange for a fifth-round pick. He was with the Seahawks from 1978-1981. He was released prior to the 1982 season in favor of Norm Johnson. If you haven’t heard of Herrera or never saw him, go look up some of his trick plays he was involved in while with the Seahawks. Some really fun times in Seahawks history.
In September of 1982, he was released from the Seahawks and signed as a free agent with Buffalo. At the time I was working in a tire shop in Kirkland and he came in to get new tires on his little motorhome for his trip to Buffalo. I was a little fan struck at the time and when I put the new tires on, I autographed the back side of one just because. I didn’t think it was cool to ask him for an autograph because I was working so I gave him mine. He never knew. Now dot net does.
