Yep, Plunkett, Gannon was up there, Hostetler was no spring chicken either and Stabler was well into his career when they were prominent.

geNO on .NET will never accept Geno Smith in the same breath with Plunkett, Gannon, Stabler or Hostetler. to the geNOs, Geno Smith will forever be that lower 1/3 QB while playing a top-notch WR corp, and behind our Schneider line.

Plunkett and Gannon both retired before 40, and neither played more than half a season after the age of 37. Hostetler was 35 his last year with the Raiders. Stabler was 34 his last year there before he was traded for Dan Pastorini, who lost his job to Plunkett.

The 2 40 year old QBs for the Raiders were George Blanda and Wade Wilson, who were only backups there.

I read that the Raiders tried to sign some 'big name' players but haven't been successful in their pursuit, except Geno. Now they have so many holes and seemingly cap space, but they couldn't get guys to join them. Even Geno, they traded, but yet unsigned.

My brother is a diehard Raider fan. And I always tell him, if players want to go somewhere to have their careers end than go to any Raiders team. Over the years every good player that has went to them has had their careers ended or seriously plummet. Geno could be on the same path and knows it. He's trying for every dollar.

A) Resigning him would signal that you're not drafting a QB and you could lose leverage -- especially if Sanders falls.
B) Say you wind up with Sanders, Dart, or one of the other guys and they ball out in preseason (a la Wilson).

So nothing to be gained by signing him early, and depending on the results of the draft you might not want him on a longer deal at all.

Geno isn't going to do the Raiders a lot of good by himself. They may, despite having some cap space, believe they need to see how much they have to spend putting things together around Geno before they know what they can afford to pay him. It isn't like Geno is going somewhere else, so the Raiders can afford the wait and see approach.

Ego and huge victim mentality can have negative repoccussions. Might even have a hard time signing a better contract after being "slighted". You gave up a 3rd round pick, if that's your QB sign him already. This shows Raiders don't have complete faith in Geno.

Like Wilson, when the Seahawks tried to trade him to the Browns in 2018. It fractured the relationship.

Although not the same scenario but if the QB you draft turns out better or outplays him in preseason you should be ecstatic.

The Raiders approach may shock people but they are going to focus on building up players that are buying into the organization and coaching staff. People may perceive Geno as a quick fix but actually what they are doing is building a foundation so the young players can learn how to be pros with vets like Geno.

That's what it sounds like to me. The original intention was for us to re-sign Geno, but when his side didn't even make a counteroffer, we pulled the trigger immediately and traded him while we could. If that's how it came down, then it was truly a stroke of genius by JS. Rather than pussy foot around with a player who wasn't all in and wasn't part of our long-term future, shag his ass and get what we can for him.

It's an odd move by the Raiders. If it wasn't for the fact that they are so obviously horrible...the Raiders were 4-13 last season and haven't won a playoff game since 2002...I'd say that it was typical Pete overestimating his team's chances of competing for a championship. The team needs to be blown up, not built around a QB who turns 35 next season.

They have several young pieces to build around including what appears to be a generational talent at TE, a couple of young offensive linemen with one being a potential hall-of-fame talent based on JPJ's rookie year, a cornerstone edge defender, and good situations regarding both draft capital and cap room.

They don't have much fat to trim, they have pieces to build around that aren't Geno Smith, and they have the resources to improve further for the long term.
