To be fair, in this case everybody already knew Smith was good but he had a serious medical condition. That's what caused him to fall in the draft.

John Schneider philosophy on IOL might have merit, one could found serviceable players in late rounds. His execution is highly questionable, if not downright failures

No way, I’m thinking JS is too proud to move on from Cross or Lucas, especially with paying another tackle this off season.

Highly doubt Smith is an option for Seattle, like at all!

He shouldn't move on from either of them right now. They both perform at a level that a competent OL coach can work with them. Abe's knee will remain suspect the rest of his career though. Need to draft at least 1 legit T to back both positions, if they can find one that swings both ways. Nothing wrong with that.

Damn, people REALLY read a lot into that quote. What they didn't read into the was the context though. It's not even an uncommon belief among people in his position.

If Schneider thinks Smith can put them team over the top, I don't see why he wouldn't make a run at him. He has shown a willingness to adapt his philosophies in the past, which is why our drafts have gotten so much better the past few years. There have been a number of times where he's never done something, until he does, like when he took a corner at #5 overall despite not previously taking one higher than 90th overall.

It's not going to matter in this case anyway, as I don't get why anyone thinks the Chiefs are going to let him hit the open market. They recently gave Creed Humphrey a huge extension and paid a bunch of money to get Joe Thuney there, so they clearly value those good interior linemen.

I suspect he'll try to sign someone though. He's facing no shortage of pressure for it.

If Jones IV is the centerpiece to Macdonald's defense (which he has looked so far), I absolutely would prefer they lock him up.

That said, there seems to be rumblings that there are injury concerns for him... but if they move on from him for that reason (or others), I think the next move will be the lock up an ILB to replace him, not sacrifice his spot for the sake of a Guard.

You can draft an interior OL in round 1 very easy. Harder to find ILB that can play now in round 1.

Tough one. Great question.

It makes me a bit sick to type this, but: Jones. As bad as the offensive line was, the running game came together late last season (even if Grubb didn't seem to want to use it). If Laumea can get a bit stronger and aware of protections, it'll continue to improve.

Meanwhile, the defense before Jones was a nightmare after week 2.

And there might still be money left over for another meaningful vet improvement at left guard.

It's going to be an interesting offseason again.
