Did we just barely beat a bunch of backups

A win that is a loss long term for the team.

Worse draft position
No new insights if Howell would be a playable starter
An excuse for JS not to do jack shit to improve the QB position

A loss really.
Loser mentality to lose for better draft choice. Only fans think this

You play to win the game regardless of draft choice. Trust me that is exactly what the players and coaches think. This is exactly what it takes to build a winning culture

As we move forward, whether it is signing extension or resigning our own free agents, McDonald’s commitment to help players reach their incentives sure will go along way as we deal with future deals. Trust is earned and I do believe McDonald did earn some of that trust today

The difference in draft position was so negligible even the logical part of my brain about such things was saying a win would be better.

He entered halfway through the game against a top 5 team who had Grubb's offense completely locked down while Grubb had him throw 19 passes in a row while admittedly not changing any of the play calls to help his backup. Hardly a good litmus test

And Geno entered against the Rams when they were beating the shit out of Russ. He still looked great then. If we think Howell is going to be better than Geno, he should have looked better than he did in that game. Plus he came in looking like he never planned on ever playing in a real game. The guy looks like he doesnt care whether he starts or not.

Who cares. It was a meaningless game. People honestly take this stuff way too seriously. The same questions will be raised. The same problems will continue into the off-season.

I already checked out this game. I didn't care about the results. The off-season has already started in my opinion. Let's move on.

You mean when we had a different o-coordinator who didn't call 70% pass plays and didn't have Geno throw 19 passes in a row? Not sure how you can compare 2 entirely different situations in 2 entirely different seasons and somehow conclude Howell is trash.

And I never said once in this forum that Howell would be better than Geno, I'm one of the few who defends Geno. Only point I made was that you can't judge Howell from a half game where his coordinator was setting him up for failure, even if he looked horrible.

Fair enough, I guess you keep him and fix the rest of the team. Give him a shot if Geno doesnt stay with us. It doesn't really look like there are any good qbs available in market or draft next season.

Turns out we're drafting in the exact same spot we would have been had we lost, since we had a higher SOS than the only team that went 9-8 (Bengals). Draft position wasn't the reason I wanted to see the backups get extended time though.

Yup I was hoping we would completely annihilate them and send them to the playoffs with a nice solid L but we probably just gave them enough confidence to win the superbowl.
If you think that they have enough 'confidence' to get past the Lions?

oooooookay :)

I don't give two sh*** if theyt had backups or not. And I'm certainly not going to assume we would lose if it was an all or nothing game. Rams are a farce, and it will show this weekend. They're an average team, like the Hawks. Go Vikes this weekend.

Speak for yourself. It was meaningless TO YOU. Not to everyone. It meant plenty to me. You go ahead and move on, I'm gonna' enjoy the win. This mentality makes ZERO sense to me. You didn't care if your team won or lost? What in the actual hell?

This. There is NO WAY in hell the players care one bit about "draft pick position"

I am with @SoulfishHawk on this one, for the record, they played starters on defense.

And JimmyG played his heart out on this audition game, trying to 'wow' our HC, GM and all the GeNOs on dot net that he is a legit replacement for Geno.

-- I was the one who posted the start Howell or Geno poll with my vote being for Howell, UNTIL, I heard about the incentives that could be triggered for Geno. At that point it is a no brainer to start him and let him finish it out. You would set a horrible precedent if someone negotiated in good faith those escalators, then you benched him so he couldn't reach them. Also, I would assume he risked losing the completion percentage bonus if he had a bad game, or was that also tied to playing in all 17?

-- I would like to have seen a full game from Howell, just to see what we might have there, but the team did the right thing in this case.
