I dont disagree with your previous post, and 100% agree the Allens, Mahomes, and Jacksons make it hard when Ive seen at least Mahomes and Jackson do some "fake slide" where they act as if they're about to slide. IMO any form or act of sliding even faking it.. it should be just called dead/end play. That way defenders don't have to think "oh man is he gunna fake me out or actually slide.."
I think a fake slide should be a penalty as well - don't ask for protection and then misuse it IMO....

That's some greasy working the rules shit :)

Fake slide should be 15 yards FROM THE ORIGINAL LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, even if it is questionable. Calling it dead, with no significant penalty, means that some QBs will continue to try and take advantage of it. Why not, if the worst that is likely to happen (barring a flagrant defensive foul) is for the play to be blown dead where you faked the slide.

One good argument against fighting in football/ basketball vs hockey is the surface it is played on. It is really hard to generate a forceful punch on ice. On land, you can plant your feet, and really get into the punch. Hand bone fracture rates support this concern.

Obviously a penalty and late hit. Player was ejected for it, and will probably be fined and maybe suspended.

If the NFL doesn't have this rule where you can't hit a QB after he begins his slide, this doesn't happen. Lawrence would have instead protected himself instead of leaving himself vulnerable hoping the defensive players will follow the rules and not misjudge.

If a QB fakes a slide, then defenders will hesitate to hit him, not wanting to risk a fine and suspension. Then the QB continues to run for another 20 yards. So then defenders will just think you know what we want to win these games so might as well just hit the motherf*****.

Hitting the QB is an age-old strategy to keep them rattled. It will never go away. Defensive players do not want to miss an opportunity to rattle a QB, which likely leads to situations like the Lawrence hit, where they misjudge or simply think it's worth it to commit the foul. After all, it probably did help the Texans win.

Some of you may think it's not that complicated. That the guy just chose to make a dirty hit and deserves to be suspended for a year and fined hundreds of thousands of dollars or whatever to set a precedent. That's a fair opinion, too, but I like to think about the nuances and complexities of such situations and how it relates to the game itself.

There needs to be a rule change, where if a QB fakes a slide and continues to attempt to gain yardage, the penalty is 15 yards from the spot of the foul, and ejection from the game. If the penalty for the player who tackles a QB while sliding, shouldn't the penalty be the same for the player involved? Otherwise, the defender cannot know for sure, and it will leave them wondering.

Fighting in Hockey is already a controversial thing, and is only allowed because of tradition. As a result of those fights, players have sustained permanent injuries and concussions. There is little evidence to show that allowing such fights actually prevents players from playing dirty. If I did something borderline dirty, and an opposing player punched me, that would just make me want to punch him back and play even dirtier.

I recall the NBA made it a rule where players can't leave the bench in response to something that happens on the court.

If dirty hits are bad because they cause injuries, then fighting in retaliation is also bad because fights cause injuries too.

Glad you agree about the rule. I think the rule just gives a false sense of protection to the QBs.
Although I agree that there has been recent data supporting the ineffectiveness of “self policing” reducing injuries, most actual players tend to believe that self policing helps to avoid the serious CTE inducing type hits. During the 90’s at the height of the “enforcer era” , there was no question what the fine would be if you took a cheap a shot at an opposing star player. Look at the concussions a guy like Crosby has had compared to the superstars of the previous era. Serious injuries don’t happen in fights (yes there are outliers), they happen when shoulder pads, rink boards, and elbows meet craniums.

How many points do you think Gretzky has without guys like Semenko and McSorley “keeping the ice clear” for him? There is reason Wayne insisted on McSorley being part of the trade to LA. Same can be said for Federov and Yzerman during their incredible run in Detroit. Probert made sure he would take care of anything the refs missed.

Not disagreeing with you at all @fenderbender123 (I enjoy the hell out of your posts), I’m just adding to the conversation.

Nick Wright made a good point. The hit is a live ball foul. Everything after should be dead ball foul. The way it turned out the fouls offset which is bs. The way Nick wants it would be 15 yards and everything after can offset. I like it. Plus like many said fake slides must be penalized too so Pat can't fake it then run 33 yards for a fg.

Would you rather have him on our team injuring other players or on another team injuring our players?
I would rather they lifetime ban a repeat cheap shot offender. End his career before he ends someone else's. The fines don't work as long as they have the word "thousand" in the fine amount. If it will cost a player his chance to make millions, then maybe they'll start to pay attention and change their behavior.

I’m very much the opinion the rule needs a rewrite. In general, there is far too much protection given for QBs on bang bang plays where slides happen very late. In this instance I think it’s fair to say it wasn’t a bang bang play but a late hit. I do think the hysteria that followed the hit was excessive though. QBs need to be told they have to give themselves up earlier if they want protection, and any fake sliding nonsense needs to be penalised as others have stated.

The issue has arisen from the excessive protection given to mahomes, Jackson, Allen etc. money talks unfortunately and it’s to the detriment of the game

Yeah, he could have avoided it, imo. He blasted him, and it was by choice.
They could stop this, by telling the QB's to play like a football player. No sliding, if he is upright and running, he takes no shot to the head. If QB's want to run, they need to take the hits... JMO.
