Our offense roster 2024 is very similar to 2023, but worse results. Does Grubb got what it takes? or just that Geno suddenly regressed?

Yes. Him, Geno, Walker etc are all handcuffed by a terrible offensive line that Pete and John botched for years. Lucas going down was a massive loss too.

I don't really think he does. I'm giving him time, but early indications are that he's likely a better fit for college.

I said it in the gameday forum and I said it in the offseason - I'd rather have Chip Kelly.

Honestly I've been feeling the same way about Grubb. Our oline is bad, but it seems like he is almost guessing at times. He has some great passing concepts. But his run game imagination is below average. And in the NFL that is not a good thing. Shanahan showed what it's like to be an elite play caller when running the football. Maybe he will be great, but right now I'm not impressed.

No.

He'd better keep sending his resumes to college teams.
I agree. Although I think there's still a small chance he can evolve into an NFL OC, the college game just oozes from everything he's doing. It may be too deep in his bones. And his O-line boy is at least half of the problem up front. A good NFL OL coach would elevate our OL play a lot.

His run game is too vanilla. His short yardage play calls (3rd/4th and 1) could be better. His redzone play calling, not great so far.

Between the 20s he's pretty good though.

One thing I will say against Grubb particularly based on last night is I actually hated the TWO fade routes BACK TO BACK from the 1 yard line to the back of the end zone. These almost never work as not only do you need to catch the ball over a defender, but you need to maintain possession while tiptoeing the out of bounds marker. It’s a low percentage call that again rarely works.

I like what I’ve seen from Grubb but apparently I’m the only one lol.

When you have one of the worst lines in the league it’s really hard to do a lot of things. He’s doing all the stuff you need to do to combat that and players need to execute. Is it his fault Geno missed so many open guys? Is it his fault Stone couldn’t even slow down Bosa? DK running the wrong route? DKs drops?

Nice to see someone actually gets it ^^^^^
It was interesting getting messages from friends claiming "He has no time back there"
Um.......he did on several occasions, all while overthrowing guys and/or throwing into double coverage.

If we're gonna' praise him for good games, we should also point out crap games.

I think this is giving Grubb too much slack.

I'm not down on him (or Macdonald, for that matter) just because things aren't perfect six games into his inaugural season as an NFL level offensive coordinator. However, there is some things that need to be changed.

For one, we are using empty formations WAY more in early downs than anyone else in the league. Does our offensive line suck? Yeah, so why don't we have RBs and/or TEs-acting-as-FBs back there more? Grubb is trying to spread out the defense like a college team does, but what Geno needs is guys who can chip (or draw) defenders in the backfield with him.

We also aren't utilizing play action nearly as much as we need to. Geno is currently dead last in Play Action percentage and we aren't nearly as successful in play action this year as we have been with Geno as the starter. Right now, Geno has a BELOW average increase in Y/A in play action plays.

Last year, with the same terrible line and same non-existent running game, Geno was running play action 3 times as often and had an increase in Y/A in play action that would make him a top 5 play action passer this year.

Geno has been very on-target this year, he came into this week leading the league in yards per scramble. So, he can still throw the ball and his legs still work... so what is the issue if it's not Grubb's play calling?

We all agreed that Waldron wasn't it and he had all the same handicaps last year, so this is on Grubb's system.

It’s a reasonable take and I might be a little biased but I still believe we’re a few players executing better and this offense is really, really good. Geno’s advanced metrics aren’t that much different from last year to this year. He was really inaccurate last night bout guys were open if he hits them. He missed JSN on a crucial third down and JSN might’ve turned the corner for a huge gain. How is that Grubbs fault? But let’s concede at the moment that Grubb needs to be better. He’s 6 games in and has never done it before at this level. I think he’d already better than Waldron. I’m confident he will continue to improve.

I'm not putting a handful of missed passes on Grubb. It's also not his fault that Walker didn't set his feet on that TD to Metcalf.

But Geno being off on some passes in one game also isn't why Walker was 2.2 YPC last night or why we took one of the areas Geno was great at for the last two years and 1) Don't do it basically ever anymore and 2) Aren't nearly as good at it anymore.

Again, I don't think Grubb sucks or that our offense even sucks (our offensive line sucks, our offense is merely mediocre/above average... which is actually impressive when your offensive line sucks). But there are a couple of 'college coach' tendencies that I think our guy needs to break the habit of.

That’s fair. We see it a little differently but we’re really not that far off.

I feel confident he’s going to be a great OC but he still has to go out and prove it for sure
