Did Schneider trade for the wrong QB?

I think Fields commanded with too high a price tag and was a bigger risk than Howell. Howell needs some coaching up, but he seems to have some nice qualities for a future starter in the NFL. He has a live arm and moves well. He has time to develop here, so both Howell and Seattle are in a good position work on his game and see what he has.

I'd take Fields but not mad about Howell. Fields could give you 6 to 10 wrinkles in the playbook every week even when he's not starting.

Just on the contract side alone, Fields is on his last year and Howell is only through one year of his rookie deal.
Two years, going on year three of his four year contract. He got injured his rookie year and essentially had a redshirt year.

I'll take the guy who got a C in calculus 4 and advanced mathematical theory over the one who got a C+ in Algebra.

Howell was running a version of Andy Ried's offense last year and did well depsite the argument that he struggled because of his INT numbers. He was asked to throw the ball until his arm fell off (against any schematic logic) and he almost did, and sometimes spectacularly. He figured sh!t out on the fly and made the best of thr plays despite the incoherent plan he was given and the poor support around him.

Fields played really well in spurts last year, but was running a watered on offense that leveraged his running ability more than his understanding of defense. Thats not to say he cant be a solid QB (i actually think he will do well) but at this point, given what theyve shown on the field and in terms of leadership and maturity... its Howell all day for me.

I won’t be shocked to see Fields as the stealers qb. And Tomlinson will get the most from him. But who knows if either will be anything special. Both could easily be career backups. No need to worry about if we traded for one or the other. Neither will be SB winning QBs.

Agree with the post above, that it doesn’t matter.

Wilson is playing this year for his career and his not inconsiderable ego will cause him to do everything in his power to make Fields irrelevant. Fields is a great athlete but his athletic ability hasn’t translated to playing QB as a pro and his skill set hasn’t materially improved despite attempts to improve it. Both of the Pitt. QBs can rot as far as I am concerned as I despise Pittsburgh

Meanwhile Howell otoh has shown he can develop and he can actually play pro football as an QB instead of just college football. Both he and Fields are works in progress but Howell appears to have a higher ceiling. I could see Howell becoming the starting guy if he watches for a year and understands he sometimes needs to not force the ball as not every play works as designed. Geno could be a good mentor for him to show him how to protect the ball. To me the trade for Howell was a smart move.

Twenty-one is a high number. However, Howell's 3.4 interception percentage his first year starting was lower than Fields' 3.7 his first year starting and his 3.5 in year two of starting. The only thing Fields has advantage on is his legs.
Quoting my own post here because it is easier than typing it out again.

Howell got thrown to the wolves last year. Whoever was calling those plays should be tied to a post and whipped. All opponents had to do was QB hunt and not worry about anything else.
