If this was for a 4th or 5th round pick i'd have been happier about it. I'm just worried that the consensus seems to be that Day 3 of this coming draft is a waste of time due to NIL and the covid year meaning more college prospects stayed in and we gave up a 3rd rounder when we don't have a second rounder. On top of that worried we don't draft a QB in what could be the best QB class for years.

I feel like a fair amount of people are overlooking the fact that Howell costs 1 fifth what Lock would have cost us this year.

Lock signed a one year deal for $5 million fully guaranteed. Howell will be making slightly under $1 million this season. That's a pretty big difference.

Also, Lock will be a free agent again after this season. Howell will still be under contract for another year, at only $1.1 million. So we won't have to go find another backup QB again next year if they don't want to (assuming Howell is the backup).

Also, trading back isn't the same as losing draft picks. We don't have any fewer picks than we had before. We traded back less than a round x2 for a very cheap young QB that has played very well at times on a team that threw him to the wolves and surrounded him with a terrible supporting cast.

There's also a chance he turns out to be a decent, or even good starting QB in a better situation than what he was in. The Washington Commanders organization is pretty close to dumpster fire territory.

He was a fifth rounder coming into the league and we just gave them that fifth back plus a third?

We got a young back up quarterback with experience as a starter with two years left on his rookie contract. 2.1 million total for two years. That is a very good deal for your back up QB

I don't understand why people are crapping on this trade. We need a backup QB with some upside, and we also need to draft a lot of new players, and this trade takes care of the QB without losing any draft picks. Having a backup with a year of experience as a starter is a bonus. Great job by Schneider on this one. It makes it easier to wait for a QB to fall to us instead of reaching.

Now we can trade back and pick up additional picks, if Penix is there maybe we take him, otherwise we load up on defenders and O line having a workable QB situation for the next couple of years.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that this doesn't completely take us out of the QB market in the draft, it just means we don't have to reach for one. If they liked Penix (for example) enough to take him if he fell to us in a good spot before, this shouldn't change that. Even if we get to camp and find out Howell has completely lost it, he's making next to nothing. We're not married to him. There are teams with QBs as their third string who are making more.

Just my opinion, but with the report that JS loved him coming out of college and then giving up draft position, I wouldn't be sure that they simply view this as shoring up the backup position. I think he'll be in the competition for starter.

Oh wow, I even brought up this possibility in a thread earlier. Had court dates in two different counties today, no jail time in either, and now we traded for a player I've been wanting... good day for me!

This is a fantastic trade! Howell has an NFL arm and abilities; took a lot of hits last year, but I've been saying for a while that I think he's legit!
Must of been for public intoxication offences based on your assessment of Howell....

Some players need time to develop. 23 years old coming off a 4000 yard season, for one million a year when you definitely need a back up. This deal is a win
