I LOVE this trade. I've seen several of Howell's games and wished the Seahawks had drafted him. Howell looked really good at times, and really bad a few other times. Howell gives Geno a challenge for the job and is a legit backup when Geno is unavailable. I guess the Hawks thought more of Howell than Lock. I thought the price would be way higher.

Howell sure looked decent against the Seahawks, 29/44, 300+ yds, 3 TD, 0 INT.
This was even though his receivers weren't getting much separation and he was under heavy pressure by the Seahawks pass rush all day and receivers had numerous drops.

He's got some pretty good highlights. Reminds me of a shorter Josh Allen in some ways believe it or not. Wouldn't be surprised if he beats out Geno for the starting role.

I like this. Trade out of the first round and get some picks in the 2nd and 3rd. Still possible they take a QB, but I'm happy with them building the rest of the team first. Maybe Howell becomes a franchise QB after a year or two learning the system the proper way instead of being thrown to the wolves

They were right. It’s equivalent to the 97th pic in the draft which is the first pick of the fourth round.
What trade value chart did "they" use? I used the one that OTC.com has on their website.

I used this one... https://overthecap.com/draft-trade-value-chart

The trade value differential is 219 points... which is equivalent to a mid-round 7th (pick #241/242).

I remember "sort of" liking Howell coming out of college. I just hope we can wash the stench of the Commanders off and reprogram the guy.

I wonder if this trade was to throw off the scent of us taking a quarterback with our first pick. John might think this decreases the chances of someone leapfrogging us if a guy like Nix, for example, starts to slide.
This doesn't make much sense since neither Penix or Nix are currently projected to be first rounders. The odds that we wouldn't have a shot at one of McCarthy/Nix/Penix at #16 seems like a really weird thing that people believe for reasons I'm not quite sure of. If we have all 6 QBs off the board by #16, that'd be pretty crazy.

We used the equivalent of a 3rd Round Pick on a 24 year old QB. If we also use a 1st round pick on a QB that would be... not ideal.

Effectively Seattle acquired Sam Howell for the value of an early 4th round pick without losing any draft picks by moving back in the draft with their 3rd #78 to a 4th #102, and their 5th # 152 to a 6th #179.

Howell is essentially a cheap backup that has some proven ability as an NFL QB. The Hawks have him under contract for the next two seasons (2024-25) and will pay him approximately $1 M/yr. for his services.

Not what I really wanted from the draft interns of a QB, but still not that bad a trade.

JS acquires a young QB with some proven ability and lowers his cap cost for a backup. The mystery still remains for the team's pick @ #16

I like this move for the Seahawks. As a Rams fan I would have liked it more for the Rams. The net value on Drafttek's updated traditional chart is pick #95 and on the Rich Hall chart it's #114. I liked his early season Commanders play. I don't watch college ball so most of you know more about his early background than me. It doesn't take the Seahawks out of the 2024 rookie QB market if a value option falls to them.

I get why those who wanted a 4-year pure developmental project would be upset. Howell is a 2-year lower ceiling back-up/developmental project cross at this point rather than a pure developmental project.

Another video with a pretty thoughtful breakdown.

Also, we're still coming out with the same number of picks. I'd rather move down and get him than give up throws on the dartboard.
We could still take a qb and let em sit for a year or two - Penix would be about 36 by then but whatever
