Yeah definitely more for the latter but even now it feels like he is likely costing himself millions that even a Watson type contract won't recoup. Could have signed an extension 2? years ago.

The extension I think was for like 180m? And not all of it even guaranteed.

So in his mind he's not accepting half of what he thinks he's worth. The non exclusive tag even rubbed more salt in his wounds, as it's what 13M less than the exclusive franchise tag?

Yeah, he's not having a good off season. Baltimore's perfectly happy paying him less than 30M a year on one year tags.

Has any player without an agent negotiated a great deal for themselves? I think a few did with their 3rd or 4th contract but never on this magnitude. Even with Sherman and Wagners contracts, they sounded a lot but were more incentive driven than anything and I still think could probably have got better contracts with an agent. I get why they did it, to remove their agents cut and by that point they mostly knew how the business worked. Pretty sure Russell Okung even asked for his to be in bitcoin at the Chargers which, I dunno, maybe an agent would have asked for a mix of bitcoin and currency?

Richard Sherman

Sherman only made roughly 10M of his three year contract with the Niners. That means he left 17M on the table during negotiations.

I have no idea what kind of leverage he had after coming off a major injury after being released here, but I wouldn't hold him up as someone who negotiated for himself well.

You want a good example, look at the deal Laremy Tunsil just negotiated for himself as the highest paid lineman ever. 50M guaranteed.

Not signing the Tender would be opting out.
except the team would still own his contract rights, and that is different then opting out as they would no longer have contract rights to you.

Someone will make an offer after the draft. They don’t want to lose this year’s higher pick.

Roquan Smith who the Ravens got in a trade with the Bears was representing himself and got a nice contract he was mature and reasonable. 5 yrs $100 million $60 million total guaranteed $45 million guaranteed at signing. Pro Lamar people have used Roquan as an example for why Lamar doesn’t need an agent you can get it done but you need your head screwed on straight and not have the maturity level of a 13 yr old on Tic Toc

i have thought of that earlier that a team(s) going into the draft looking for a starting QB and don’t get one but I can’t think of any teams that would have the cap space, draft picks and a need for a starting QB. Whether it’s true or not the idea that Lamar quit on the Ravens is real among the leagu.

if Lamar does sit out I say give Cam Newton a shot a similar playing style probably wI’ll come cheap and will get you through the year where you can make a better decision at QB. I am expecting Lamar to sit out 2023 and what the Ravens do for 2024, would they bother tagging him again or just walk away players who have sat out a season are not the same when they return

All these players are running around Twitter acting like some great injustice is being done to Lamar.

The injustice is Watson and Wilson stinking up the joint, that's what they should be mad about. NO ONE wants to give up a king's ransom of picks and players AND give the dude 200M+ guaranteed, especially after Watson and Wilson have both crapped the bed on their monster deals.

So yeah, the owners are taking back some control over these insane contracts that perpetually stupid owners and franchises like the Browns keep handing out.
Add Kyler Murray to the list of recent contracts with lots of guaranteed money ($160 million) and very poor returns.

You can't put a quarter of your cap into someone who will either suck or miss more than a quarter of the season.

Laremy Tunsil fleeced the texans.
Laremy Tunsil was a decent deal for the Texans and Tunsil. He’s a good LT, the Texans needed him and can afford to pay him. $25 million a year for 3 years is doable. When Cross’s rookie contract is up he will be commanding at least that

People do know that you can still trade for Jackson for less than 2 first rounders right? Ravens can take less than 2 firsts if they wanted, Jackson then signs his tender, gets traded, and then signs a new contract with his new team.

Can people please stop acting like they have no other choice but to give up 2 firsts, to acquire him.

Frank Clark was tagged by us, and went to the Chiefs for a First and a Second.

I thought Murray's contract was the right money correctly structured. He refused to play out his 4th or 5th year on rookie terms, and he was sensible to take that approach.

His new deal was 6 years from when he signed with 3 years guaranteed, ($103M). The 4th year money doesn't guarantee until the 3rd year, (effectively giving him 2 years guaranteed money at that point). Guarantees continue to be added after that but with reduced $ amounts.

The Ravens have made it clear they don't want to trade Jackson at this time, (even for 2 X 1sts). Then again it might depend on the value of whatever picks are involved. 1st round picks have a very wide range of values, and that's part of the problem.

The salary for the first round picks are now slotted so you can reasonably guess how much money is saved from not having to pay two first round picks. Then take that difference when negotiating a contract with Lamar over lets say a five year period. So making his contract guaranteed for 2-3 years is a more likely outcome.

A five year fully guaranteed contract is not going to happen for Lamar.
