Why is a lineman downfield a penalty?

See teams go beyond 1-2 yards every game all year, never called
All 3 of those penalties the lineman was at least 3-4 yards downfield. I even noticed it before the flag was thrown

While SF was aloud to hold Metcalf on a throw that was inches from his hands ... Yeah no steering though, just a coincidence smh
Refs miss calls sometimes. They missed a couple in the first half like roughing the passer. Metcalf and Diggs were both fined by the nfl for last game but no flags were thrown. It happens.

When was the last time you saw That penalty called three times in a game, let alone three times in a half?
I don't remember it ever being called 3 times in one game in that short of time, but then I have not seen linemen that blatantly downfield early on 3 plays in one game in that short of time either

Is that because you weren’t looking for it every game? It’s not like that is a part of the game someone watches actively every play. If you do, then props to you, you are waaaaaaaay more technical of a fan then the rest.

So you don’t think that offensive holding happens, per the rules, on almost every play?
No, not every play, but I do agree holding could be called more often than it is. However, linemen being downfield early is not really that common at all.

Too much to cover. If they’re eligible, theoretically you could have 10 receivers.

Also, if defenders are constantly getting blocked upfield, scores would average 100+ points between the two teams.

Yes I actually do watch for things like that. Maybe not every play or directly, but I do watch linemen quite often. I guess once a lineman, always a lineman

But they aren't eligible

If they were, they could be downfield....
