Pass play wasn't a problem, it was the CHOICE of pass play.
Well a cerebral qb would have recognised the D. Would have seen Browner telling Malcom the play, would have seen the coverage on the 1 receiver would not have tried to force it, either throw it a way or look at his other reads.

The play concept was the right call the execution was wrong.

So was blowing a 10 point lead.
yes BUT while Avril was in there, he was giving TB fits. TB started having time to throw when Avril went out and their nickle back Lane broke his arm. Giving up 10 points to a TB offense in the 4th quarter is by no means out of the ordinary.

The point is 10 points or not RW had a chance to win the game and did not execute. All the noise about passing verses running, blaming Bevell, blaming the D blaming Pete, etc etc is just noise trying to cover for a QB that was supposed to be élite.

Exactly. ELITE players are the ones who make the big plays in the big games.

RW was not elite that day.

There is only one true tragedy to befall this franchise.

Ken Behring....... bad calls, bad refs, bad free agent decisions, that is just football. But few teams have had a Ken F'ing Behring.....
Here's a banner for ya. I made it like 15 years ago...

Another reason the Super Bowl XLIX goal line call was a bad call is because it is a low percentage call on multiple levels. Since Belichick had rehearsed a defensive response to that very call means that the call itself was super predictable.

People deny that Butler made an outstanding defensive play on the ball - but he did, because of the rehearsal. The reason Butler had rapid access to the ball is because the “pick” did not get set properly - and there was no chance it would have.

Finally it was a failure before the ball was snapped as Wilson’s first and only read for that play is over the middle and his ball placement was poor. Wilson should have thrown it low the way Tom Brady would have. Belichick out-coached Carroll on the play as superior coaching decided that outcome.

Running on second and third wasn't going to happen, much less running on second and third and then having a fourth-down play. The Seahawks only had one time out and there were 26 seconds left on the clock when the ball was snapped on second down. They could really only run once.

Edited to add: the idea, and it's the same one I think any head coach would have, was to pass on second down. If it's incomplete, that stops the clock, and then you can run on third down and even if you don't make it there, you've still got the one time out to stop the clock and let you try anything on fourth down. The problem is that Wilson threw it where only Butler could catch it.
Wrong. With 26 seconds left you have time to run at least 4 plays. How long do you think a play on a shortened field takes??

Everyone and their brother knew they should have run on 2nd and goal from the one, it was widely reported on. It's 4 down territory with the game on the line, Lynch was killing them, put the ball in the hands of the guy who got you there at least one more time before trying something riskier like throwing the ball. There's a reason play callers opt to go with rushing plays more often on goal line stands, with a shortened field passes are much easier to defend.

Yes Wilson made a bad throw but it was a flawed play call to begin with. It's incredibly congested in the end zone with 22 guys in a 10 x 50 yard area. Throwing in the middle of that mess is one of the worst places to target since it's even more congested then the sides. If you're gonna throw, then roll Wilson out have him make the safer throw to a big crossing receiver or a TE.

It's obvious that it's "four-down territory." And it's true that with 26 seconds left, there's time to run four plays, but WITH ONLY ONE TIME OUT, there's no way to do that without passing. You can run on fourth down and one other down before that (using the time out immediately afterward if you don't score). But if you're going to run four plays with 26 seconds AND ONLY ONE TIME OUT, then at least two of those plays will have to be passes.

We honestly should have a sticky thread regarding that game, because the debates about it will never end. The desire to pass was just fine with the circumstances. What we needed was to run a play from that formation that was different than what we always run from that formation. Lockette sprinting out to the flat would have been a walk in touchdown because all of their defenders were sitting the pass inside.

You run first and if unsuccessful you call your time out and then throw it. When you throw it, don't throw to the middle, throw to the right flat or right side of the endzone.

The Seahawks passed when they should have run, and because of it, they lost when they should have won.

I'm sure you'll tell us next that you know better than the writers at Sports Illustrated.
