Surprised by the number of responses to the loss to the bucs that said "RIGGED". Curious to see how many .Netters agree with that.

Hmm, I must have done this wrong as the poll options are not showing.

EDIT: I tried to create a poll post in the "NFL Nation" forum, but it didn't offer a Poll option. So i created it in the Seahakws forum, where it did, but it seems after getting moved to this forum it lost the poll options. Maybe there's a bug in the software?

I'll save you some time, here's how it works with every single naive myopic fanbase.

Their team wins: "OMG we're amazing and we're going all the way!"

Team loses: "Fire everyone and the games are rigged against us because <insert nonsensical reasoning>

Accurate. To think this isn't even a possibility based on what we see week in and week out is not rational.

How does the steering happen.

Does Goodell phone the refs personally, or does he have people for that.

Are the games scripted? How does Goodell and the refs decide which way they want the game steered?

This is all fascinating stuff, so please enlighten us JTT.

NFL Head of Officiating.

Always seems to know nothing about actual officiating so his "real" job is telling selected game refs which teams Goodell likes that week.

If the games are rigged how do they keep that fact secret? If it ever got out it would be the end of the NFL as we know it. Would become a rival for WWW Raw, or War or whatever they call that shit show these days.

Bummed the Poll got lost. The options were:

NFL is rigged, just like WWW?
Refs are paid to throw games according to Goddell and NFL owners wishes?
NFL is as real a Xray's' Canadien girlfriend (ie not real)?
The games are real, the refs are human and make random mistakes that poeple try to read like tea leaves?

Gotcha.

So how does Goodell pick and choose which games he's steering? Does he have a wheel in his closet that he spins? Does he consult with the head of officiating and they come up with the steering together?

This is fascinating stuff, I'm glad we have you guys to learn us up on this nefarious game steering.

Is it rational to believe this happens and no one hears about it? Do I believe that sometimes a ref is paid to make certain calls? Yes I believe that happens, but it's not the league, it's a bettor. And a stupid one at that. How many people make up the referee team? Including the guys in the booth and back in New York? How many of those would you need to pay, and how much to make your bet a sure thing? It has to be a losing proposition.

A one off occurrence, sure it could happen. Does the NFL script games or the season? No way. That's a prescription to burn money. The NFL is a billion dollar operation. Mess with that and you end up in the desert outside of Vegas.

I feel like this is trying to rationalize with your crazy grandma who thinks Martians control her TV.

Emotionally rationalizing crazy conspiracies like this one is an unwinnable argument. Because there's no way to apply logic or reason.

"The league's out to get us" = 100% of all fans like this, in every fan base, in every city, for every sport on the planet.

Yeah, but Grandma is right. Her TV is controlled my martians. I mean, have you seen that Ray Walston guy who has TV antennae come out of his head. Just like a TV. Proof!

It's not rigged but humans do have subconscious biases which play out when it comes to officiating. Home field advantage plummeted during COVID in part because referees were no longer being swayed by the home crowd: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-00784-8
The few experimental studies on referees’ decisions found that the crowd noise does indeed favor the home team: fewer punishments are administered to the home team in comparison with situations where the crowd noise was absent16,28. Although not a formal part of the traditional model, it is known that performance itself influences referees’ decisions29,30,31. Attacking teams may force, for example, the other team to revert to fouling, which results in more warnings for the defending team

The other main problem with officiating is that prior expectations impact our ability to accurately view the present. Jordan got a fourth step, and if a backup CB gets tangled up with a star WR then the star is getting the benefit of the doubt.

Got me again.

You know what the most insidious part of game steering is? It only happens when we lose, never when we win.

I mean, what are the odds! Well played Goodell, well played.

We're not talking about the random human element of refs subconsciously making quick inaccurate decisions based on factors like crowd noise, home field, whatever.

We're talking about fans, many on this board who think there's an actual nefarious crime ring of conspiracy between the refs and league office to steer the outcome of games. Because..................? Idk, but it's real dude, and we should all be concerned.

That much I know. I can't divulge anymore information. I've probably already said too much.

Games are steered to keep them competitive for all four quarters. It doesn't matter who the teams are. Blowouts are bad for business. Losing viewers in the third or early fourth quarter loses advisement money for the NFL. Case in point when it favors us, the Bucs only had one penalty yesterday until the third quarter when the game looked like it was heading for a blowout. Then the refs call back to back penalties against them to get us moving along. It has happened in almost every game I have watched this season (at least five every Sunday). Go back and look at some of the game logs. There was a stat mentioned a few weeks ago on one of the NFL Network shows that there have been more one score games this season than any other season. It is good for business.

I don't think the league is out to get us. I think the league is out to extract as much money from fans as at all possible.

The best way to do that is to have as much integrity to the game as you can. If it ever got out that Refs are given orders to keep the games close they'd lose money. I know I'd stop watching, wouldn't you?
