This re-signing seemingly puts the screws to the idea of acquiring Mayfield though.
One can only hope. Mayfield would be a huge and expensive mistake.

Imo, this signing is great news. Geno played well last year, and seemed to be on the cusp of playing winning football, which is probably why Russ came back early. Now we can be patient and find the qb we really want.

My first thought was Geno did the right thing by resigning from the Seahawks, he is clearly past his expiration date. But then ... oh wait ... you mean he "re-signed" ....? Dang, no no no ....

I like it. Familiar with the receivers, familiar with the system. He just has to go into camp with the mindset that he’s competing for the starting job. I think it’ll be a good and fair competition between he and Lock. People just need to accept the fact that Lock and Geno are our quarterbacks

This tells me we're not trading for Mayfield or drafting a QB other than perhaps a late round project. Geno and Lock will battle it out for starter and the other guy will be the backup. Plus we still have Eason.

It's a smart move. We don't have a quarterback on the roster that has experience in our offense. Even if he never plays a snap in a regular season game, it will be worth it for him to help Lock, Eason, and whoever else we bring in to compete for the job. He's a serviceable backup.

If ever there was a poor fit between player and coach it is Baker Mayfield and Pete Carroll.
Yeah, an intelligent, passionate, high-energy guy is a complete mismatch with Pete "Greg Popovich" Carroll.

Not only does DUI Geno offer absolutely no upside whatsoever, you have to simplify the hell out of the offense when he's in, which largely defeats the purpose of having a vet backup to begin with. When he got action with us last year, he was a 31-year-old on his fourth team with 31 career starts and 13 additional appearances in mop-up duty, yet he played like a 5th round rookie who you only put in there because he needs the reps. There's no more development with him; he is what he is. There's a reason he was still available for us to re-sign in mid-April.

I can see that logic, however, if it’s really 4M that seems unnecessarily high.

Maybe they anticipate a suspension for the DUI and are artificially boosting the base knowing he won’t collect it all?

Yeah, if it's $4M, that's a little steep for a backup QB. There's also a strong possibility that he could get cut.

This is a hilarious chance for all those Geno Smith pumpers that were sure he was going to be as good or better than Wilson - to see if that is true.

It was weird there were even such things as 'Geno Smith fans' but I seem to remember them last year.

If we get another year of Pete while Geno Smith is the QB, wow. As least Locke has upside.

I am not even sure I want Geno as a backup to anything. Not because of the DUI but because he is not a good QB.

This is a pretty ignorant take. Regardless of 1-2 or whatever it was when he was in, 105 rating, 5 td 1 int ratio and he was running the ball, passing in the middle with ease, and moving the ball around. Him and DK looked more in tune with each other than Wilson and DK. And the offense overall didn't look like the same stale shit we've seen with Wilson for the last 5 yrs and 3 OC's. I think Geno fits Waldron's system just fine. And your overall post as well as your nick name for him is pure and utter stupidity. Also, Geno hasn't had the benefit until coming to Seattle to have the weapons he has now.

The level of pure hurt Geno has caused some people never ceases to amaze. Oh, those darn Geno pumpers. They're absolutely everywhere, just pushing him hard like he's a cryptocurrency or something.

The need for a simplified offense? Holy shit, never seen that before, especially not for the entire past decade.

Wonder what Zac Dysert is up to? He could run the whole shebang.

I like that the best argument for Geno is that he looked passable against an Urban Meyer-coached team that ended up landing the No. 1 pick in the draft for the second consecutive season.

QB bridge season. Not too dissimilar to the money spent on Jackson and Whitehurst in 2011.

Maelstrom,

Are you implying you DIDN'T see people posting that Geno would get better results than Wilson, or that we would actually be a better offense under Geno than Wilson?

Just curious. No Geno Pumpers at all? It was all an illusion then?
