Many believe Vegas "fixes games" or creates lines solely to fool the bettor. That is fallacy. Vegas has one objective: Take equal action on both sides of an event...then take the juice from the loser. They do not have to cheat, or create "trap lines". IE: they take 1 mil on this side and 1 mil on the other. BOOM. That's a profit of 100k without themselves gambling. The day they get caught cheating the public, that all goes away.

Thanks for this...this season I started getting an old friend hitting me up every week for football advice. He kept hitting so I decided to try my hand at making several bets. I soon realized, there's a lot more to betting just picking the winner and how many points you think will be scored. Very informative post here. Thank you, sir

Anytime Glove. I'm happy if you got something from this and please don't hesitate if you have questions I might be able to answer. I'd discourage most from betting, but I can live vicariously from those that do. ; )

I appreciate your post.

I have bet money a handful of times and have gotten lucky every time but once.

In the superbowl I wagered 500 and I pulled 4500 total. I spent a little on the ncaa tournament in the final won a bit more, then I lost a hundred on lebron vs spurs :(

My wife expected me to leave some money to work with and I might next year, but I really wanted to have a more informed and objective look @ a football season so next year I can have a more established knowledge base.

If you have anything else good to read please post it or let me know.

Great read my friend. Pro football is very difficult to wager and win consistently. I used to live a 4 1/2 hour drive from Vegas so went there plenty and I am definitely not money ahead with any gambling I've ever done there including sports wagering. It's always been recreation for me so I'm fortunate in that respect. I was in Vegas and did win money opening Monday night this year on the Lions beating the Vagiants. Always feels good to win betting football.

I may retire to Vegas (or Tucson area, haven't decided yet) and if I do I will keep your advice in this thread in mind and try to learn to think like a guy setting the spread and look for weaknesses. There's one this weekend I think qualifies.....the Bengals opened as three point favorites on the road in Cleveland Sunday. The general public, in their ESPN hype fueled fascination with Manziel, have bet that down to Browns favored by one. Cincy at -3 was good IMO and at +1 is great.

Congrats bro. I don't want to be a wet blanket, but please go forward betting as though your money behind instead of money ahead. Now, that disputes the old adage "scared money don't make money" (or however it goes) but why I say this is because guys that win early in their betting careers...oft times end up losing a lot. Treat wagering as you would heroin (I don't do heroin...just an example) . It's as addictive and equally dangerous.

Hey SD1..only found your post now. Busy ass week. Sorry about that.

You have your head on right. And I envy the fact you have the discipline I never had.

I basically quit because I could no longer feel the thrill of winning and I took every loss like it was a personal insult. With winning comes arrogance and the arrogant have no business betting (imo). You lose sight of the fact that no matter what your lines say, the ball is oblong and capable of bouncing where ever the **** it so pleases. I kept our sportsbook going and was able to live vicariously through clients. Then the law got involved, felt we were having too much fun and it became prudent for me to step away from gambling in totality.

But if you decide to make the move to Nevada, PM me and I can introduce you to a real good dice strategy (if you don't currently have one in place / are interested). A knowledgeable dice player has the control a sports bettor does not. And being in control is much better than being out of control. That much I learned. ; ) Best wishes to you my man.

Thanks. I'm a blackjack guy and rarely play the dice. Doesn't mean I won't change my mind though and if I do, I'll let you know.
I was spot on with Bengals wasn't I? Those are the weaknesses I would need to look for to only be a bit behind instead of losing my ass. Unfortunately, ones that obvious are few and far between.

Definitely a good call. And an excellent point regarding "hype". For the most part, smart players like yourself put the hype-machine on ignore. But like the bet you describe, players able to do that are also far and few between.
