+1 on Bryan

Also watched some vs vids of Taven Bryan and I'm not so sure he's not worth a 2nd round pick when we trade down. There are some questions, but he has the ability to really dominate any OL and I don't think that changes in the NFL. He also lines up all over. You could pencil him in over Naz at some point in the season once he gets his responsibilities down. What I read about him isn't quite what I'm seeing and that dude is dangerous. He's got huge potential at 3 tech and can otherwise play pretty much all along the DL at every spot.

Hand doesn't seem to play to his measurables. Seems to jog a lot and is slow to read and I think those two things are correlated. Awesome athlete on combine papaer, but something seems like it's missing. Maybe 4th round? Maybe later. I'm thinking that Trenton Thompson would be a player I like more. Thompson is a little top heavy, but he plays harder and more sure of himself than Hand, it seems like, and so it looks like he plays faster even though he doesn't run as fast. Thompson has some Red Bryant to him and I think some teams are going to see that. He can play 3 tech probably better than Red though.

Bryan in the 2nd.
Trenton Thompson maybe in the 4th or 5th or possibly Hand if he's gone. Hand will need work though.
Looney in the 7th.[/quote]

It sounds like they view Johnson as more of a pass rush specialist, not a 3T in the base defense. He actually looks smaller than he was in college, which probably helps him be more explosive. I wonder if Johnson could play outside in the base defense, i.e. some 5T, etc.

“In an attack defense, I think a 3-technique is one of the guys that can be real aggressive,” Johnson said. “You want your (nose guard) to be patient and use his hands, but as a 3-technique guy you want a guy that can get off the ball and play the run with an attack mentality but also can pass rush when you need him. To be aggressive on the second downs, to be able to put pressure on the quarterback. I can see where there would be adjustment from a two-gap to an attack defense. But coach Norton, man, he gives me the freedom to be able to go out and be aggressive and be athletic whenever I need to. So I think that this was a better situation for me.”

Johnson was signed in March as a free agent after spending the last four years with the Vikings and the team has indicated it views him as a likely starter there with second-year player Nazair Jones rotating in and also playing quite a bit, but for now appearing to favor the veteran Johnson as the starter. Shamar Stephen, another former Viking also signed as a free agent in March, projects as Reed’s backup and a rotational player.

This is interesting news. I had heard before that they viewed Johnson as more of a nickel rotational player, being too light to start at the 3T in the base defense. When discussing the two immediately after their signing, I thought Carroll said something about Stephen being the potential starter at 3T in base and Johnson playing as a pass rusher in the nickel. I'll need to check on that at some point. Johnson would seem to have the versatility to play some 5T, but I haven't seen much about that possibility.

Johnson obviously thinks he should start:

Edit - Here were Carroll's initial comments on the Johnson/Stephen signings at the NFL annual meetings:
Both guys played a lot, showed a lot of diversity in the running game as well as in the rush game. Tom Johnson is more of a rusher than Shamar (Stephen). Shamar is a big dude, very similar to the guys we’ve had over the years. If you look at all the three techniques we have had through the years Shamar is a guy that really fits that role, and we’ll give Naz Jones a chance to be in the rotation and all that.

Stephen missed OTAs with a meniscus injury, which may have changed the calculations a tad, at least for now.
