I wonder how much different our list of hires would have been had we not needed to wait so long to get Macdonald signed?
Significantly.

Starts at the top though, so I'll take a good HC surrounded by bums over middle ground on each.

Grubb was a great hire regardless of who the HC is, and when it comes to the rest of the guys I don't expect many to be here long either due to promotion or replacement with a full hiring cycle next year.

Meanwhile, Macdonald has a 6 year contract.

If we're terrible next year and mac/Schneider repeat Carroll's fault of loyalty to his coaches, then I'll be concerned.... Until then I don't think the hires this year say too much.

Are you perceiving some of your coaches to be less than stellar, CC? They seem fine to me but you may know more than I.

No, but that's somewhat my point.

A LOT of unknowns on the staff with either not much experience in the nfl, or at the position they've been hired at.

I'm expecting a rebuild, so I doubt many of these guys will be here long term, and I'm not expecting immediate results anyways, but I think a lot of people are expecting way too much this year, especially when I see people claiming 10+ wins lol.

That's not even an indictment on the coaching staff, but literally an entire organization shake up with inexperience across the board is significantly more likely to have some real growing pains than be smooth sailing out of the gate.

Reality of the situation, I loved the Macdonald and grubb hires, but even there, are some real question marks. Hopefully it's just a self-defense mechanism to expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised, instead of upset with 6-7 wins instead of 10+ because the big bad carroll is gone.

Super Bowl odds for 2024 for the morbidly curious, Vegas seems to have the same concerns

  • 49ers: +500
  • Cardinals: +8000
  • Rams: +3000
  • Seahawks: +8000
Fwiw I certainly wouldn't place us behind the cardinals even with the turnover 😂

I'm glad we waited for Mike Macdonald. Are there, or were there, better OC candidates out there other than Ryan Grubb?
John Schneider hires coaches like he's drafted players; best coach, and or player available.

I'm right there with you. I'll only speak for myself but I have no problem with any record this coming season. I'm thrilled that Carroll's gone. It feels like we're finally moving in the right direction and if there are growing pains, well heck, maybe that means we're growing.

Trying to think what vacancies we have left to fill. Sean Desai is still out there maybe for Def quality. Do we have a db coach yet? TE? WR?

Right now, Karl Scott is listed as Def Pass Game Coord/DBs.

Other positions remain unfilled. There have been some reports of hires, but not from known good sources yet, and not on the team site.

Have we hired a strength and conditioning coach yet, if not get Ichiro's ass in here, we have been dogged with Hamstrings and quads and pec and back issues long enough.

Two more interesting coaching hires include assistant Oline coach Brendan Nugent and OLB coach, Chris Partridge.

Nugent kind of took the Andy Dickerson route rolling years of assistant line duties into run game coordinator into finally being the main guy much of it with the Saints, and last couple years with the Chargers. Lot of experience to help buoy Huff’s transition.

Partridge is much more interesting because his duties kind of been all over the place with a strong background in STs:

2003–2004
Paramus Catholic HS (NJ)(AHC/DC/WR)
2005Lafayette (DB/STC)
2006–2007The Citadel (DL/STC)
2010–2014Paramus Catholic HS (NJ)
2015Michigan (DPP)
2016–2017Michigan (STC/LB)
2018–2019Michigan (STC/S)
2020–2022Ole Miss (co-DC/S)
2023Michigan (LB)
2023- PresentSeahawks (OLB)

What stands out though was he was the LBer coach for Michigan national champs but also spent the last 4 years prior coaching up safeties.

It make it interesting because the Seahawks new DB coach I think Jeff Howard was coaching LBers for the Chargers.

There seems to be a strong indication that MacDonald wants his LBers to be able to think like DBs, and his Secondaries to be able to think like LBers.

Interesting that we have 3 OL coaches: Huff, Nugent, Odom.

I like that we have separate quality coaches for O and D.

Haven't seen anything about a new strength and conditioning coach. It would be nice to have our top pick make it through training camp without missing time...
