Ah man I will miss the Ginga' Ninja but this is a sign it's probably time to hang up the cleats. Great punter through the years. Welcome young blood!
Yeah, gonna miss the ginger ninja. That picture of his TD pass there will forever be hilarious. 8)

You want to pick at the head of the run, not at the end. P&J pulled it off with P and RB.

And yet some people can't do anything except whine about value and supposed reaches even though the more information that comes out, the more clear it becomes that Penny was not a reach. Anyone that threw a tantrum proclaiming Penny would have easily been available in the 3rd round has proven that they have no idea what they are talking about.

This is a great pick, even (especially?) where we took him. But I'm hoping our offense's production improves so his skills aren't necessary very often. But if our new edge rushers can create pressure after downed punts around the 5-10 yard line? Field position game will be in the Hawks' favor fairly consistently.

I wonder how Jon is feeling right about now? I'm sure his agent is on the line with some teams trying to gage interest in Jon before he is cut.

Yesss, this should be a great pick. If he can be like Johnny Hekker, or indeed Jon Ryan a few years ago, this will be super helpful to the team.

This is going to be a really good benefit to a rebuilding defense and a net plus for the offense.

I just found out he was the MVP of his bowl game. Wow. If he can be even close to Hekker, this would be a game changing pick.

Just seems weird that this board is all about what belichick would do when talking about being okay with a second for Earl but still likes this pick.

If we hit on a bunch of low round picks then I won't care about this sort of thing but it sure doesn't seem like a belichick move.

Gostkowski was a 4th round pick.

When you need a kicker or punter and an excellent one is there to be had.. you get them.

Dickson is seriously one of the best punter prospects of all-time. That’s no exaggeration. He changed games for Texas on his own.

What were the chances of this guy being drafted in the 5th by any other team?

110%

Lol yeah that made me look the fool didn't it. Turned out 3 punters and a kicker. JS/PC have a crystal ball

As an old timer, I remember a guy named....well Ray Guy. Raiders drafted him in the 1st round. Yes, look it up.

Not sure how many games he won for the Raiders over the years, but it was a lot. He has awards named after him. That was before we had Thunderfoot in the Dome. Guy could get 10 yards or more of field position everytime they swapped punts on 3 and outs.

Not saying Dickson is a pro-bowler or anything, but just last year we tried to go cheap on the kicking game and the results weren't good. ;)

Tough times, though. Jon Ryan was just getting his endorsement career started. :)

We got arguably the best RB right before all the good RB's went off the board.

We got the undisputed best punter, right before the other teams went crazy on punters and took them all of the board.

That's GREAT drafting.

These people complaining, man, it's completely out there, what's being said - utter nonsense... I think maybe the state of Washington ought to reconsider it's outlook on weed.

Agreed, on all counts, Z_Man.

Pete Carroll mentioned Micheal Dickson's Rugby background. Mentioned Rugby background in relation to unusual/unique spin he can put on the ball. That's something intriguing to remember and look forward to seeing. Rugby influences seem to resurface from time to time. Looking forward to seeing him punt.

I think, perchance, they need MORE of the local crop...too much stress. :D

Much like the running back situation, there was a run on punters after the Seahawks picked Dickson in the 5th. Vikings picked a kicker at 30, then Green Bay and the Raiders picked punters at 35, 36. Pretty unanimous we got the best one. JS working that crystal ball.

Not to mention Steelers taking an FB also in that 5th.

That’s 4 other low-snap specialists. Steelers’ and Packers’ FOs are pretty established and generally great at drafting. Vikings’ and Raiders’ FOs have seem to have been rising the last 2-3 years getting quality prospects that helped fuel play-off runs.

Those teams don’t seem like franchises that don’t know what they’re doing and wasting draft ammo ( I mean, other than the Raiders giving Gruden that contract).

It’s not like the rest of the draft was all that great, there were some pretty lauded prospects still on the board and many of them didn’t end up getting picked. That’s the draft. Teams are competing for football players, teams have to react to what they are feeling, to what they’re hearing, and to what they’re seeing down to the ticking seconds or they might miss out.

It’s also not that uncommon for the best punters, kickers, or even FBs to generally get picked in R5, sometimes R4 (I don’t think the Patriots regret drafting Gostkowski with a 4th Round pick like a decade ago, IIRC).

Using 1 of 4 5th Round picks on a possibly great Punter is not as asinine as trading up in the 2nd Round for a possibly great K like the bucs did a couple years ago.

I don’t think it’s a wasted pick, not if the guy can be great because he might be a staple for 10-12 years when it’s all said and done.

This is the NFL... there’s a very slim chance that a rare 2nd or 3rd Rounder might not make a roster but typically a lot of those 4th and 5th round picks won’t ever see the field.

So yeah again getting a possibly great P for a 5th Round pick isn’t horrible value especially if he sticks around for 8+ years.

I will say the temperament here is a little more understanding of the pick than some of the reactions I’ve seen elsewhere.
