Maybe with the changes he thought he should look at other opportunities, happens all the time, also this new guy is from Green Bay, think about it, could be a guy John had a long time relationship with also.

I'm surprised the following hasn't already been posted ...............

........................... considered by some to be a significant change in cap policy.

New vice president of football administration Joey Laine replaces Matt Thomas as the top salary cap manager for the Seahawks, and the change could be significant. Thomas, of course, oversaw a cap management style that was among the most conservative in the NFL, and rarely saw the Seahawks get aggressive with their cap management. Rather, the Hawks have preferred to operate in a method more consistent with salary cap management methods from prior to the 2011 collective bargaining agreement, and have largely avoided the use of void years and other tools to defer cap charges. https://www.fieldgulls.com/2024/4/4...cap-expert-in-front-office-change-matt-thomas

This move gives me some pause. Apparently, he was a disaster in Chicago as their cap guy. He was fired, along with their previous GM. He was also with the Saints previously. Worked under Mickey Loomis. Him not being able to stick with one organization, is a red flag.

Salary cap purgatory is overrated as the Rams and Bucs showed this past season. What is worse is trading away precious draft picks for one dimensional safeties or 1 year rentals.

Void years is a good way to offer cap flexibility which is how the Saints are able to field a competitive team year to year. It could be argued the Saints need to start over since Brees is gone. But SP held that team together through his coaching leadership.

So coaching matters along with proper draft evaluations and scouting.
