“If they want to continue a high percentage of blitzes (with Adams), there’s one guy that I think they need to go target,” Heaps said. Link >>> [urltargetblank]https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1429637/heaps-seahawks-xavien-howard-jamal-adams/[/urltargetblank]

So that is the big "if" quote Brent Stecker builds on in his article. The article doesn't acknowledge a more diversified and less predictable zone blitz. It ignores the cost to cap and bargaining assets.

Two days later Brandon Gustafson, another 710am author, follows up by tapping into what Heaps said to write "Heaps: Why Seahawks’ pass defense will improve despite questions at CB" link >>> [urltargetblank]https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1431352/heaps-why-seahawks-pass-defense-will-improve-despite-questions-at-cb/[/urltargetblank]

Editorializing to fill in the current news void until training camp arrives is the norm for this time of the annual NFL football cycle.

The Seahawks front office has already placed a big bet on Adams. The Jamal Adams extension is the leading priority. Surely consideration of an extension for Quandre Diggs follows closely behind among the priorities for the defensive backfield.

Would they prioritize Diggs after they (assumedly) extend Jamal? That'd be somewhere near $35-40 million per year tied up at safety. That's in the neighborhood of 15-20% of the current salary cap. I've read the Field Gulls article about it. I don't think it makes sense. That article didn't even bother to mention Ryan Neal.

https://www.fieldgulls.com/2021/6/25/22 ... -extension

Even after Jamal returned from injury, Pete seemed to prioritize getting Ryan Neal on the field. He's got to figure in on this decision.

And we shouldn't overlook that they did use a second-round pick on Marquise Blair. His ability to stay on the field is certainly in question, but he's still only like 23 or 24.

The fallacy of sunk cost shouldn't inform decisions like this, but it's happened before.

All excellent points.

And, thank you for reminding us of Ryan Neal. What a special player and individual he turned out to be. He filled in for Adams nicely. Loved that blocked special teams punt for a safety among other things. Lot of talent in the db room right now ..... just don't see any immediate urgency for additions or extensions.

Irrelevant anyways since he's a beast in both zone and man, and a major upgrade over anyone on the roster.

If they don't go hard after him, hopefully it's because team doctors don't like his knee injury from 2019.

Cap and trade assets are relevant. But never-the-less, appreciate your enthusiasm and posts.
