I don't think there's any question that the play in question was cover 3. The play called was designed to beat cover 3 by making the corner choose between the deep man and the mid route while also putting a guy on a route to the flat and the safety really needs to see it. The play design TYPE is referred to as a flood. Even if it's cover 2 there is a weak spot in cover 2 between the deep half safety and the corner in the flat. Generally in a flood scenario you either want to be in man, but it's already been mentioned that you can't run man all the time and that's correct. There is a play design to beat every type of defensive call and vice versa.

The more I look at it, I think Sherman was trying to indicate to Earl that he was planning to break his assignment and jump the intermediate route, and make sure Earl had his back. But still, there is no way for a safety in the deep middle to get to a corner route, even Earl. Just can't do that. No chance.

Awesome man! Did you play the game at one time, or are you just a student of the game? Good stuff!

So, do you think the addition of Percy Harvin will make us better against the press?

I did play/coach/scout for some time, but more than anything, I have been curious about this kind of thing since I was a little kid, and was fortunate enough to have a patient father who had a decent amount of sports knowledge. Nowadays I'm really helped by a good childhood friend that was lucky enough to play DB in the league for about ten years. He gets a couple calls a week, asking about situations, keys, his thought process, and that kind of thing. I can tell it annoys him, but he humors me.

Percy will help against press, sure. But it is a bit of a different beast. He's going to be primarily playing in the slot. He doesn't excel at beating press on the outside, but when you play in the slot, press is a little different because you motion more, you're almost always off the line of scrimmage, and you don't have the sidelines cutting off one side. You can release to either side. A lot harder to effectively press an inside receiver.

Well, whatever it is Tical, keep doing it. You're a huge asset to this place.

You've been on my "underrated and must-read" member list for awhile.

Tical, since you obviously have quite a bit of great football knowledge, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Bevell's play calling.

Do you think it's good across the board? Hot and cold? Mostly bad? Somewhere in between one of the aforementioned? "Other"? Whatever your thoughts, if you don't mind, I'd like to hear them.

Pehawk, thanks so much for the kind words! Be careful though, I already tend to be an arrogant SOB way too often, you're just inviting trouble.

Roland. That is an absolute onion of a question. Let me think on it for a few hours and I'll get back late tonight or tomorrow with hopefully some sort of coherent opinion.

We should have a permanent sticky on the main page: "Ask Tical21, .NET X's and O's guy". It would help to educate the entire fanbase here at .NET. He should at least have the title above his Avatar (which has always cracked me up). Thanks for your insight buddy. Just from your contributions in this thread, I will look at the game differently from now on.

Oh, and would you mind me asking about who this friend of yours is that played 10 years in the league? A little name-dropping would be cool with me...

I met a LB from the league a few weeks ago. Played at BSU and then drafted by miami and traded to another team and played for about 4-6 years. Good kid. Thanks Bluethunder and Tical. I appreciate these postings. I have also met and played golf with a football player....Jerry Kramer. Good man.

Take all the time you need. Days, a week, whatever. I have my opinions on it and I'm curious to see how they compare to yours.
