A year ago, I would have been annoyed by this, even after the clutch plays. But in 2015, Kearse really found himself a nice niche as a short-yardage option in Bevell's new system. You need one of those guys for the spread to really work.
People keep talking about this spread.
I have no confidence that we are going to suddenly do it and damn the power running game that Pete loves. He loves physical football, the spread isn't that. I don't think a few games of production will force Pete to change his philosophy. When we couldn't run the ball with Tavaris a few years ago he went shot gun, hurry up. That worked well but he didn't stick with it.
I just need to see more before I think this team is suddenly different in philosophy than the smash mouth running team we have had.
We're not going to morph into the 2008 Patriots or 2013 Broncos - but we're not going to only allow Wilson to throw it 20 times a game either.
Marshawn Lynch was a rare talent in that he actually got stronger the longer the game went on. I love Thomas Rawls, but I don't think he's that type of workhorse back. Conversely, the offense really took off when it ran through Wilson with Rawls adding a lethal dose of yards behind him.
So yeah, having 3 WR's you can count on is important.. especially when Richardson and Graham are recovering from season ending injuries.. and in the case of Graham, an injury that is a very difficult one to come back from 100%.
Factor in the things you can't chart with statistics.. his clutch gene, his ability to get open when Russell is scrambling for his life.. the trust and chemistry he has with Russell... his ability to block.. the fact he's LOVED in the locker room by his teammates.. and it's a no brainer to me why they brought him back.
