Germany will have rested their players by that point i'd guess.

Hopefully, the U.S. takes all three points on Sunday so if Germany also wins, they'll have to play their best players against us for at least a bit in order to secure a better seed in the knockouts.

This World Cup has been super-fun. The World Cup always fires me up to watch soccer, and then I don't keep up with it, kinda like when I get a new FIFA game and that gets me watching for a bit. I have been watching more Sounders matches this year (and enjoying them because I have a rooting interest), so hopefully I'll stick with it a bit more this year.

That's assuming quite a bit. Ghana may get something from them. But yes, there's a decent chance we see a reduced German squad.

Still...that's a pretty good squad

Cameroon just fell apart at the seam. Looks like it's Brazil and whoever comes out of the Mexico/Croatia match. Latter needs the win, Mexico can afford the tie.

Draw sends Mexico through. Will be interesting to see how they approach the match. Sit and counter or try and outplay Croatia.

Croatia is good, and that midfield of there's is very dangerous. I see them controlling play and pressing Mexico. This will leave counters for the Mexicans however, and we saw first hand that the Croat defense isnt the strongest.

Chile and Netherlands will play to see who gets Brazil in the knockouts. goal differential puts the Dutch in command, with a tie securing the top and placing Chile in Brazil's path. What a match either would make.

Altidore is ruled out against Portugal. That's a big hit for the U.S. Is Ronaldo out for sure? I didn't see anything about him being out on the Fox World Cup website. I figured him being out would be a top news story.

I think we all anticipated Altidore being out. Personally i dont think we would see him until at earlies the round of 16.

Ronaldo is "100%" apparently

Which means we're probably looking at a draw. :)

true true, but we can hope for something like 3-3.

Neither team can defend for s--- and you have Sturridge and Suarez on the field.
Might be fun

Well the first 25 minutes or so was ugly. #3 for Uruguay should be tossed, I think he has a captain band on his arm though so maybe he gets a longer leash. I feel for Rooney, he's busting his ass but the upper "V" goalpost got him on that header, but he's creating opportunities as well. Hope the 2nd half is better for both teams.

Great end to the game. I imagine our English friends have gotten hammered and won't be with us for awhile. Can't blame them if so.

What a truly shocking England performance tonight, even by our standards.

First goal -- Henderson poor pass to Rooney, Gerrard misses out on a soft tackle and then we still have 6 vs 2 at the back but allow Cavani the time to pick out Suarez, who's peeled off Jagielka, and head it in. Criminal defending.

The second goal a big long punt downfield. Great flick on by Gerrard to be fair to find his team mate. Oh wait. Again the two centre halves are poorly positioned. Awful.

But more frustrating than the two goals is the continued inability of an England team to quicken the tempo. After the equaliser from Rooney Uruguay were on the ropes. They made a change to slow the game down and take away some of the momentum -- and England did them a huge favour by arseing about at the back with the ball, knocking it around the back four and Gerrard/Henderson. That was the time to go for them, finish them off. They were tired and desperate. We allow them to regroup, concede the ball a couple of times and they're at us again... eventually leading to the winning goal.

And what was that after half time? 7-8 minutes of some of the worst this country has provided. At a time we needed a bit of fight and character, it was nearly 3-0 in the blink of an eye.

I hope Costa Rica draw tomorrow. Put us out of our misery. We don't deserve to fluke through and lose to Columbia in the last 16.

We need a coach with imagination who is up to date with modern trends. None of the good teams play strict lines and 4-2-3-1 without pressing the ball. The game's moved on. Look at Chile last night. If you aren't Spain or Holland that's how you have to play. We are slow, slow, slow -- which totally contradicts what our players are used to in the Premier League. Hodgson, sadly, is not the man to take us forward.

Gerrard's race is run for England. Another poor display. We don't need two holding midfielders and Henderson is capable of playing as one holder with more creative players in front of him (although the jury's still out big time on him too).

Solidify the back by playing another defender and one less holder and build the team around pace and creativity -- Sterling, Barkley, Rooney, Sturridge etc.

Another hopeless England performance at a tournament and we'll be heading home with our tails between our legs.

I wish I was a Yank.

Right on all accounts English...

Do you a young coach like Rodgers, Martinez, or Ponchetti willing to tackle that chore (and what's the history for managers in the PL doing both jobs?)

Will say, despite the issues, they did look far more creative and purposeful than in the past. Feel like their team defending let them down. Some of that was having Gerrard taking up a central space but asking him to defend wide. I agree where the core lies is with the youth. A creative and gutsy manager can get something significant from the incoming group.

I feel for England. I think Martinez is a good candidate to replace Roy. He staved off Relegation what 3 times with Wigan? Somehow won the FA Cup, and got a top 5 finish for Everton.

He's a manager who can get the best out of his players, whoever they happen to be.
