I don't like this one bit. Still one of the best corners in the game, and may be THE best corner in the slot in the league. I can't believe we're willing to rely on Walter Thurmond III. Well, let us hope Lane or Maxwell can play big in the playoffs in the nickel.

Thurmond beat him out, plain and simple.

I for one am very happy for him, and I hope he stays healthy and has a great season.

May be one of the best tacklers, but he is not good in coverage anymore.

WTIII is a straight baller when healthy, and he is young. Winfield is a great corner still, but the wheels are going to fall off soon.

Winfield didn't look very solid in coverage in the preseason. I can handle that being the reason he was let go.

But any reliance on WTIII is laughable. They'd better feel that at this point Lane or Maxwell are upgrades to Winfield and I'm sure they must. They can't trust WTIII's health any more than we do at this point.

Winfield's release clears a spot for a versatile development player like a Shead or Parker.

Unfortunately, cutting Winfield only saves about $500k. $1 million of his $2 million salary was guaranteed, and of the $1 million savings, at least $500k or so will be needed to pay his replacement on the roster. Additionally, the non-guaranteed portion of Winfield's contract was "unlikely" to be earned anyway per rotoworld, so this move could break even or actually cost us cap space.

I wasn't happy about the Mike Rob cut, but I'm willing to be open minded about this one. Winfield looked old in the preseason at times and barely played. I have to assume he didn't look much better in practices for the team to make this decision.

I loved the Winfield signing, but the risk was that he might show signs of age very suddenly. Sounds like his knee was slowing him too.

I hope Shead gets the last spot. Not only is he our best remaining corner, but I love seeing him make a play and then pronouncing his name like a long drawn out "SHEEEEEE-iiitttt." Kind of surprised that we ditched Blackmon now considering that Seattle was probably looking at a new #6 CB when they did it.

there's still time to make a swap, which is the most likely outcome

Thurmond will play out of his mind (after what I saw in the preseason, I'd put my money on him as well).

He looks to be a big X-factor that teams are going to have to account for, and that's huge for a defense that is already so stout. The LOB needs a wildcard, and Thurm is the perfect player to fill that role. He's skilled at his position, a freak player, and has a huge chip on his shoulder (due to the missed games from injuries). It's not insane to think when this guy is healthy he has the potential to be the best corner on the team (ringing endorsements from Sherm, Carrol, and some media pundits can be found to validate this).

Pete put him through a lot of tests to see if he can handle a hefty workload, or show he can adapt to what his thrown his way. Thurmond came out on top, and proved he's ready to do it for an entire championship run.

FO had Winfield as their highest rated CB. Some players don't bring it during preseason and shine during the season. Winfield has proven he can shine. I can't see cutting him.

This move makes sense. We are so stacked with CBs right now, it makes sense to cut the high paid veteran whose best years are behind him.

In Pete Carroll's world you have to bring it every day, every snap, every practice, not just on game day. It is part of this always compete mantra. No exceptions what so ever.

unless your name is Marshawn "practice once a week and don't play in preseason" Lynch.
He was on the injury report every week and hardly practiced last season
he doesn't have to because he brings it and more on game day

Very common for RBs who have over 300 plus carries in the season to have limited touches in pre season

It's also very common for 36 year old cornerbacks with 15 years experience to save themselves for games that matter.

Hey look at it from this point of view, the confidence that can be gained by WT3, Maxwell, and even Lane by beating out a former top CB in the league can be worth more than the cap hit we take from releasing Winfield. If Thurmond stays healthy, then I think he has more than enough talent to be a very solid nickel. Maxwell and Lane are good on special teams and Maxwell I think could easily fill in at nickel and should be the starting at dime. I'm more pissed off about Mike Rob leaving to be honest.

I swear if Thurmond gets injured again, I want the worst of the worst done to him!

We're cutting him to clear a roster spot for Leon Washington after the Skins cut him.
