Word out of camp is that he (Fields) looks really sharp, athletcally and in terms of his knowledge of the offense.

Justin Fields is 25, Russ is 35. Wilson is going to have to lift that team to AFC contender to keep his job. If he starts the season 2-2, gives up a handful of sacks/TOs to Dallas in week 5, any of it -- he's gone and they work with Fields.

There's no reason to ride with Russ unless he reverts to 2013 Russ. The question is can he ever be that humble again?

And Aaron Rodgers is 40.

Look, If I'm the Steelers, I'm studying the 5-game win streak that Russ took the execrable Broncos on , their longest win streak since 2015, against some quality teams.
And play to all of Wilson's strengths that made that happen....

Now, if Tomlin tries to coach the RW square peg(unintentional pun) into a Steelers round hole, a-la Sean Payton, they are doomed.

Arthur Smith is the OC and he has worked with lesser talented QBs so Wilson just has to be average and avoid TOs and that is good enough for Tomlin.

IF the Steelers were to make a switch it would come mid season if they are slumping IMO.

The Steelers first game is against the Falcons and they could catch them by surprise as the Falcons have been hyped up this season. Broncos, Chargers, and Colts games will be tougher. Cowboys, Raiders and Jets match up well against the Steelers defense so the Steelers offense has to pull through in those games.

So with the bye week in week 9 is when you would see a potential switch because the Steelers have the Commanders as the next game coming off that bye. Then they have the gauntlet of Ravens(x2), Browns(x2), Bengals(x2), Eagles and Chiefs.

That five-game winning streak was fueled mostly by turnovers. In those five games, the defense got 16 turnovers and the offense only lost the ball three times.

Part of how the Broncos won those games was by limiting how much Wilson could hurt the team. Over last season as a whole, Wilson was mostly throwing checkdowns, and these games were not exceptions to that. How much can Wilson possibly be considered responsible for the team's success in that time when he averaged just 166 yards passing per game in that winning streak?

Yeah, just like all the frustrated 49er fans, and it appears, lots of Seahawks fans. They didn't and still don't comprehend how Wilson would win games.

He didn't win all of those games the correct way.

Thats what S Peyton said, almost literally.

When he was asked how he thought Wilson played in one of their 'signature' wins during that win streak when he did almost nothing for the whole game and then put together a successful drive to win the game- he stated very clearly that the plays Wilson made werent reliable or predictable (paraphrasing) because they werent the plays the offense was supposed to run. ie - you cant run an offense on broken play improv consistently and expect to win. Peyton wasnt forgiving the 3 qtrs of ineptitude just because Russ ran around for the last 2 minutes of the game and pulled a rabbit out of his ass.

So, unless Peyton has lost his mind and doesnt recognize good QB play anymore, or he's also on the supposed 'hate train' or frustrated, maybe Russ, for all of his miraculous highlight plays, isnt capable of sustaining a COMPLETE offense playing the QB position in the way coordinators (and the 10 other guys on his side) need him to play. Pete allowed him to do it. Hackett didnt. Peyton didnt. And if Fields shows he can understand the offense as well as Russ and add to that his considerable natural ability... Tomlin wont allow it either.

Maybe ADB was just frustrated too... Golden Tate...

3 game winning drives out of the five game winning streak.

Call me crazy but I see Russ having a resurgence of his career. One thing we can't deny is WHEN HE CHOOSES, he can get laser focused on his craft and I think the last two years has been a giant learning lesson for him. If he truly want greatness, which he does, if he really wants to be anointed in Canton (which he does), he knows what he has to do. Settle down with the "Brand" and "Legacy" BS and get back to football.

It would be a nice redemption story if it happened...

Excellent post!
Someone mentioned the 3 game winning drives in the 5 game streak.
The D got the TOs for those little drives.
Sean Payton knew what he was talking about.

I think this is realistic. Denver humbled him.

I think we will definitely get to see how much humble pie might have made it through that ego. If he goes back to the mindset of what got him there then he might be able to enjoy a resurgence.

Yup. The part people forget is that Pitt didnt expect to be able to get Fields. They didnt bring him in to back up Russ necessarily. They got him after Russ came in and were surprised he was available. Makes me wonder whether if they'd gotten Field's first, whether they'd even have bothered with Russ.

But I'm sure that given the above is the case, Fields has been told by the FO that if he wants the job, he should just go and take it.

The other interesting thing about the QB controversy is that Fields isnt one to be shy about calling a spade a spade. He was critical of coaching in Chicago and didnt at all defer to Fowles and Dalton when they were starting in front of him. I doubt he will bite his tongue about how he feels should Russ start to stink it up as starter. And Russ doesnt take that kind of blunt critique well...

It will be interesting in Pittsburgh this year.
