Why no McIntosh?

I know I along with a lot of others in the Gameday thread were asking for them to put McIntosh in over Charbonet after it was clear that the running game was going absolutely nowhere especially with a slower running back. What’s the point of having McIntosh on the team if when you are clearly unsuccessful running the ball, you won’t put him in?

Sidenote: I also found it strange that they gave Grubb game ball over Geno Smith???

Seemed really odd that they didn't try to switch it up. He had no place to go. Then again, his MASSIVE first down in OT made up for it all, imo.

Watching Grubb at UW, I'm actually surprised they didn't do more motion stuff. They just kept trying to pound it up the guy. Switch it up, get some guys going outside when it's not working.

Charbs was switching sides all game, lots of motion, isn't it neat to have a QB who can diagnose things at the line and make blocking adjustments?

McIntosh is a pretty bad blocker. It's his worst attribute as a pro if going off his preseason snaps. Holani is better in that regard.

McIntosh is also a slower back. He's a bit more smooth but overall is a 4.6 speed guy and it shows on tape. He's just smaller.

100% for blocking purposes is my guess. Hard to blame the staff for that reason. One missed block in a game that tight could be bad news.

There weren't a ton of holes to exploit and Charbs was really solid in the passing game - reading and adjusting, blocking, being an outlet

With the OL playing they way they are, I think that is why he was getting all the carries

Agree on charbs blocking skills being the reason. I like KM...but blocking is his weakness.

its 100% this. In this offense with a line this bad if you can't block, you're not seeing the field.

Honestly, prior to this year I thought this was a weakness for Geno. Turns out he just wasn't being given the tools to make his diagnosis with, one of several things about Geno I have to eat crow on. So thank god for Grub too.

I think Wilson developed without those tools which is why this is still a problem for him, while Geno was simply missing having them.

awesome exchange in these two posts. I was worried this was going to be too much for Geno and it looks like it's the opposite. All the pre snap movement is making it EASIER on Geno to read the defense. this really could elevate Geno to top 10 maybe even top 5 status.

Charbonnet does the little things that helps wins football games, very very well - gets what's blocked for him, falls forward, doesn't freelance, soft hands when catching, and most importantly, can be trusted to protect the QB. Just a good and trustworthy all around football player that you can win with.

No, he isn't an electric runner like K9. But there is a reason Charbonnet played 96% of offensive snaps yesterday - it was a close game, and the coaches trusted him to do everything correctly.

I enjoy McIntosh in a preseason type setting, but not in a tight game with a struggling oline against a good defensive front when your QB is throwing it 40+ times.

The only thing I didn't like about the running game was we just kept going right up the gut for very little gain , it's the only thing that reminded me of peteball.
They were probably hoping to wear down the pats D but it drives me nuts cuz I feel like if ya wanna tire the big guys out make em run a bit to catch you .
I didn't notice any of the power running game like we used the week before so if any x's and o's guys can tell me if they did i'd love to hear it and also be a little bummed we couldn't pull it off against them

I would say he’s way faster than Charbonnet.

I think it's illusory. McIntosh's lack of burner speed and overall explosion shows up on his Georgia tape, and his Seahawks tape is very small sample.

Charbonnet looks slower, but I think it was probably caused more by him looking for holes than it was a lack of athletic capability. He'd look plenty fast from singleback and he looks much more fluid in space, like when catching passes.

What a few of you are noticing is the benefit of having different skillsets. Charbs wasn't drafted to be a Murray backup but as a complementary piece. He's a downhill runner who runs hard, blocks well and has good hands. He contributes on special teams and is a good chance of pace back/goal line back/third down back.

With the benefit of hindsight, Charbs probably did hesitate too much yesterday. The Patriots front seven was better than expected and the running lanes were clogged, and he erred on the side of trying to find a big play when that really isn't his skillset. He's better off just decisively hitting whatever hole there is and driving forward with one occasional cut back. Murray would have done better on some of those carries as an extremely explosive runner who can occasionally turn nothing into a home run.

That doesn't mean that Holani or McIntosh should have gotten more play - I like them but neither of them are Kenneth Murray. Sometimes you are missing a key player and that's just how it is.
